Near the end of May we did a weeklong walk in England’s Cotswolds. Ours was not the longest walk, and our mileage was less than it might have been on more aggressive walks. (Basically, we did an out-and-back loop starting and ending at Moreton-in-Marsh.) The plan was to enjoy the walking, but have plenty of time and energy to enjoy the towns we passed through and stayed in each night.

It was a quiet moment at the Pacific Ocean shoreline on the upper Big Sur coast. It would not last, of course, as the area is overrun by visitors during the warmer months. I go very early in the morning to beat the crowds, and I had a couple of good hours before the Monterey and Carmel tourists finished breakfast and drove down the coast. (If you want to see the Big Sur coast in relative solitude, try a winter weekday morning.)

I confess to having photographed this scene quite a few times. I live close enough to Big Sur that I can drive down for a morning of photography and be home for a late lunch. This spot, where the Little Sur River flows across Little Sur Beach and into the Pacific Ocean, has always intrigued me. I stop and at least take a look almost every time I am down there.

When we stayed at Riquewihr, France, in the Alsace region a month or so before Christmas 2024, our lodgings were just barely outside the center of the old town. We could easily walk over there and back. While the main street could be busy, side streets were nearly deserted. Here one of those streets is lit by lights on the sides of the buildings as dusk arrives.
Like many other towns in this part of Alsace, the place seems to thrive on cuteness — and wine, food, and other goodies. the Main Street, decorated with holiday lights, is where most of the visitors happily spent their time and money.
