It was a quiet moment at the Pacific Ocean shoreline along the upper Big Sur coast. It would not last, of course, as the area is overrun by visitors during the warmer months. I go very early in the morning to beat the crowds, and I had a couple of good hours before the Monterey and Carmel tourists finished breakfast and drove down the coast. (If you want to see the Big Sur coast in relative solitude, try a winter weekday morning.)
It was very foggy as I drove south through Monterey and past Carmel. I had thought of stopping at Point Lobos, but the the conditions looked pretty gray there, and I thought I could see the fog thinning to the south. So off I went. A ways down the coast the sun began to break through the overcast, weakly at first. When I stopped here a patch of sun was lighting the two small, rocky offshore islands.
