We didn’t have blue skies every day on our spring walk in the Cotswolds, but when the weather was clear it was often beautiful. We did a weeklong walk there on the last few days of May and first few of June. yes, there was rain — though nothing approaching a deluge, aside from a few minutes on our last day. But on this morning we had a spectacular sky, blue and streaked with clouds, as we walked through this agricultural area of fields and pastures.
The contrast with my favorite kinds of hiking back home in the western United States was striking. There my preference is mountains, the higher and more rugged the better. That kind of terrain simply doesn’t exist here. (A 1000′ “peak” is considered a mountain!) Instead we walked pleasant trails through woodlands, across meadows and pastures, and around fields of wheat. In many places, as in this photograph, the boundaries of fields were marked by these marvelous old and very large trees.
