I am not the plant or macro photographer in the family. That would be Patricia Emerson Mitchell, my wife, whose camera is most often fitted with a macro lens. But I tag along, and I enjoy the challenge and the change that comes with photographing small things. While we were in Bath, England last June we visited a botanical garden, and I made this photograph while wandering among the plants.

This was a bit of an opportunistic photograph. If I recall correctly, we had gone looking for coffee and pastry (or was it lunch?) in Bath. We heard about a little place that was supposed to be popular and headed that direction. It was just a bit outside the main tourism areas of the town, and we were starting to see some places that were a bit less oriented to out-of-town visitors.

There is a lot going on in Bath, which probably explains its popularity. Only steps apart you have “baths” dating back to the Roman era, a large central church, shopping districts, and more. Walk a little further and there’s a river, plenty of places to eat, and increasingly less tourist-oriented facilities. Cross that river and perhaps walk up some hills, and the place seems quite different from the central tourist-centric zone.

We spent a couple of days in the quaint English town (center) of Shrewsbury this past June. After close to three weeks of exploring Scotland and Ireland followed by a weeklong walk in the Cotswolds, we had several weeks left to visit various English towns and cities. Shrewsbury sounded like a slightly lower key stop compared to our previous stay in Bath.
