Arriving at this spot involved one of those driving adventures that characterized much of our time in northwest Scotland. We were following a main road northward from Skye, and here we diverged to the west to get to the coast. As we topped this rise we looked back and saw this spectacular scene — spots of sunlight on nearby hills, light rain falling between us and three distant tall peaks, and a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
The roads here are not like typical rural roads in the Western US. Even relatively main routes in this part of Scotland are single-tracks — one lane with frequent pull-outs (or “passing places”). Back home we rarely encounter that on paved routes. But once you get used to this and the right-of-way etiquette, it isn’t a big deal. But it does make for some rather “interesting” driving at times.
