The story: This photograph was made just before sunrise at the top of Mission Peak, on the ridge above Fremont in the southeast San Francsico Bay Area. Here the sun is already striking distant Mt. Diablo, a landmark peak in the East Bay and Delta area. A group of us had climbed Mission Peak for the sunrise onn this Thanksgiving Day morning.

The story: As is often the case, the photo reveals a “different truth” about the scene than you might have experienced had you been there. When I look at this photo it evokes warm light from the newly-risen sun on a quiet morning. In truth, it was freezing, a damp gale was screaming across the summit, and I had to weight down the tripod to keep the camera from blowing over… :-)

The story: This dirt road runs along much of the ridgetop between Mission Peak and Monument Peak above Fremont and Milpitas, California. I love these open, ridgetop grasslands but they can be difficult to photograph unless the conditions are just right and you find some interesting arrangement of the formal elements. Here the curve of the road leads into the distance at the ridgeline, there were some interesting clouds, and the early morning lighting was just right.
