Brilliant winter sunshine on an urban Manhattan sidewalk.

This photograph comes from an earlier winter visit to New York City back in 2019. Those were the days! Despite the cold (quite severe cold, actually) we bundled up and went out on foot every day to explore and photograph and eat and drink and mingle in the crowds. When we weren’t walking we took the subway almost everywhere. The streets back then — in the before times when “covid” was not part of our vocabulary — were packed with people in the familiar New York style.

Offhand, I do not recall exactly where I made this photograph, though I do recall a bright, sunny morning and being distracted by the bright reflection of light on the sidewalk and by the combinations of lines (from the sidewalk itself and from shadows) and curves as the walkway wound into the distance in a place that was momentarily uncrowded.

When It Reigns I’m Poor

These are, or so it seems, the words of “Mario” according to the inscription on this urban doorway. I’m always intrigued by the odd bits of street wisdom found among the less sophisticated graffiti and simple visual vandalism found in places like this. These texts often have an ironic, streetwise quality, but also reflect a simple view of the world, where the words are perhaps taken to be more profound than they actually are. That being said, I kind of like this one.

While those who read my posts know that I just returned from a visit to pandemic-plagued Manhattan, this photograph comes from an earlier visit a few years ago. Back then it was easier to simply head out and walk wherever I felt like going, as we did on this day. Now you can go out on the street — and it is perhaps safer than going indoors — but you are likely wearing a mask and avoiding other people.

Update June 21, 2022: The actual “Mario” contacted me, and you can read what he wrote in the comments below on this page.

A woman with a walker sets out to cross Broadway in Manhattan.

After not going to New York City for two years during the pandemic, we had made plans to visit once again during the holidays. It seemed safe enough when we made the plans a few months ago, but as the departure date approached the Omicron virus took off and created a worrying spike in infections. We contemplated cancelling the trip, but in the end we decided to go and take exceptional precautions. This was not the sort of New York visit we would normally do. We like to travel around on the subway, cram into crowded restaurants, visit museums, go to concerts… none of which we did on this trip. We masked up consistently, tested daily, and limited ourselves to visits with our “kids” and their spouses.

All of this was not conducive to New York street photography, but I did manage to get out a couple of times with a camera. The city was strange, with everyone wearing masks, most dining done outdoors, and nearly deserted streets. I photographed this woman as she was about to head across Broadway on the Upper West Side.

Illusions, photographed on a Manhattan street in winter.

This photograph may not be quite what it first appears to be. First hint? I made “this photograph” on the streets of Manhattan on a very cold winter day. Perhaps you are now looking a bit more closely. Possibly you have noticed that odd white area on the woman’s face and wondered what it is. If you looked very closely at the scene you may have noticed a few other incongruities. I hope you wondered about the nature of the borders at the top and bottom of the image.

“All photographs lie.” This is a line I repeat frequently when certain ideas about photographs and photograph arise. I’ll admit that the statement is a bit of a cheap shot, but I say it to provoke some folks to think differently about photography, particularly the notion that it is real or that being “real” is it primary purpose or goal. The “lies” in the photograph I present here are on multiple levels, and I’ll mostly leave you to ponder them on your own.
