Curving Street, Rain

Part of what I love about Italy is that many cities’ central areas are so old that they were laid out before motor vehicles existed. Consequently streets are quite narrow — in some cases only wide enough for pedestrians. The entrances to homes and businesses are right on the streets — no “front lawn, and no fences. These streets usually don’t follow a geometric grid design, instead radiating from a central square or following the contours of the landscape.

The old, central part of Arezzo, Italy includes areas that follow this formula — though there are also newer streets that are wide enough for some vehicle traffic. We wandered streets like this one on a rainy afternoon, when the showers made the cobblestones glisten.

Santa Maria della Pieve Church, Arezzo

As I promised a while ago, there will be more photographs from our ten-weeks of Southern European travel in the summer of 2023. This one comes from the Italian town of Arezzo. This was one our stops in some smaller towns, and it was pleasant to have a bit of downtime between larger and better-known cities. This view shows the Santa Maria della Sieve church next to the Grande Piazza.

There were thunderstorms in the area on this afternoon, and when we arrived at the Grande Piazza the sky looked ominous. We planned to explore, perhaps checking out restaurant options before getting lunch. But within minutes the skies opened up and we made a run for the nearest place, where we got a table under an awning and watched the storm.

Graffiti, Bologna

We spent several very enjoyable days in Bologna, Italy last summer. There are many wonderful things about this city — its two famous towers, the activities in the central piazza, the food, and more. But the amount of graffiti in the central city is quite striking, to the point that it seems to be a real part of the city’s character. The street art is quite diverse, including the familiar large scrawls, bits of poetry, and more — in this area including a Madonna and Child image.

I remember this from our first visit years ago. We came into the city late in the day, dropped off the car in a garage staffed with questionable characters, had to hunt for our lodgings inside an unmarked building, and then found ourselves unable to enter. We got in, got settled, and went out to find dinner. In our area the streets were deserted, no streetlights were on, nothing was opened, the walls were covered with similar graffiti. The sensory effect was post-apocalyptic. (I can report that the Bologna experience is mostly much different than that!)

Pausing At The Foto Automatica

This photograph of people pausing at the Foto Automatica in Florence took me back to a previous visit to this city. On that earlier trip we were barely there, stopping only briefly between time in Chianti and our flight home. We stayed in a hotel a few steps from this old-school photo booth, and I was surprised at its popularity. Even in an age of hand-held selfie cameras there seems to be something special about crowding into this little old-school booth.

I photographed it on that first visit, and I photographed it again when we spent a longer time in Florence, this time long enough to explore the place more extensively. We did not stay in the same hotel, but we walked past one day — and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Foto Automatica was still there, in its odd little corner along the narrow street. As I watched a (family?) group paused to make pictures.
