A large flock of migratory snow geese in a pond in California’s Central Valley.

The conditions must be just right, you must arrive at the correct time, persistence is necessary, and a bit of luck is important. If all of this works out you may encounter stunningly large flocks of over-wintering migratory geese covering the landscape in parts of the Central Valley of California. If you are extra lucky and extra persistent one of the flocks may settle in right next to you.

I don’t know how many birds were in this flock, but it stretched across this large pond and over a great distance from side to side. The visual impact is obvious, but unless you are there you miss out on the sonic effect. The flock produces a constant audio drone, with sudden crescendos when a threat appears — and with that threat all of the birds’ heads rise straight up on their long necks until it passes.

Well, it seemed absurd at the time…

Over a decade ago I photoshopped this fake image as part of a 2011 April Fool’s Day joke post at this website. Working from an iPhone snap, I flipped some digits on the then-crazy prices on the sign to make it look like the price was almost $10/gallon. I fooled quite a few people — more than I expected. Even more ironic, the photoshopped fake prices were picked up by right wing disinformation bloggers and turned into a fake news meme about California gas prices. (I found out when the media contacted me for interviews about it.)

Here we are, approaching April Fool’s Day 2022, and the price at this always-outrageously-priced gas station is now actually higher than the then-unbelievable price in my fake photograph! An online gas price tracker that I checked just listed $9.99/ gallon there!

Yes, gas prices are high. No, they are not that high, even in California. I would never buy gas at this price-gouging station. It usually has the highest price in the state, and this is the worst season for pricing there. I’d at least drive to Stovepipe Wells, where park concessionaire price controls make it $1 or $2 cheaper. Better yet, drive across the border to Nevada if your plans take you out that way. And tank up on your way into the park!

Migratory geese fly in the first light of a winter morning, Central Valley.

My drive began in darkness and nearly two hours later as I approached my destination the faint pre-dawn light appeared above the silhouette of the Sierra Nevada to the east. As usual, I arrived before sunrise on this late-winter morning, and began getting set up to photograph birds before the first direct light arrived. One of the best moments after these long, dark drives is when I first open the car door and hear thousands of geese and cranes nearby.

I had a particular location in mind for this morning, a place where I knew that the dawn light would come from the ideal direction if I could find birds still there. But almost immediately groups of snow geese began to rise from nearby ponds against the colorful predawn sky, flying in circles above the wetland terrain.

This was a very cooperative flock of lesser sandhill cranes. Although, as expected, they did divert away from my position to avoid flying over me as they passed, the did face into the light in just the right way, and they managed to (intentionally, I’m sure!) coordinate their wing positions so that almost all of the basic wing positions are visible. Even more: not one of them blocks another bird, and all of them are completely visible.

I photographed this group on a late-winter day when I had gone to California’s Great Central Valley. Based on past years the departure of the great flocks of snow and Ross’s geese was only days away, and I hoped to photograph them one more time. The end of “goose season” (though a few other types of geese stick around) is perhaps the best time to photograph geese and cranes in their active modes. Huge flocks of both kinds of birds are around, and they are often easier to photograph at this time of year.
