This entire day was a bit of a venture into the unknown. Since we had a full day in the area between Ullapool and Skye, we decided to drive a big loop out to the coast and down the Applecross. Applecross feels fairly isolated, even by Scotland standards. It is on the far west cost, looking out over the waters toward Skye and other island. We took a quick drive through the village and then headed up the hill toward Applecross to begin our return to Ullapool.
Sights like this are one of the reasons that I am happy to not know everything about a place before my visit. As we let Applecross, we had almost no idea of what we would see on the pass. It is a high, rocky and beautifully desolate pass — perhaps as high as we were while inScotland. As we crossed the summit of the pass, a huge chasm opened before us, and the road descended precipitously toward the deep valley below. And to the right towered an absolutely stupendous cliff, framing the distant view of water and mountains in the distance.
