The Heidelberg Bridge spans the Neckar River and heads to Old Heidelberg, with the Heidelberg Castle in the hills above.

This may seem odd, but when I travel to a new place I often prefer to not know too much about where I’m going and what I’ll see. One reason for this is that I like to save a few surprises for my arrival at the place itself, and another is that I like to, as much as possible, come to know the place at least partially from my own perspective rather than that of some person who writes about it and tells me what to see and what to think. (There was a time when I was more organized about preparation – perhaps I’ve just sort of “been there and done that” with the very organized approach. Or maybe I’m just getting lazy!) So I arrived in Heidelberg knowing very little about what I would see (or what I should see) and little specific knowledge about the place beyond that which I had picked up from various conversations.

In addition, we were very fortunate to be able to stay with Patty’s brother and sister-in-law, both of whom have lived in Germany for many years. Their home is on a small side street in a portion of the town that is somewhere between very old and modern, and which is on the “other side” of the hill that runs along the Neckar River past the altstadt, or old town. So, knowing almost nothing about what I would see, we set out from their home on a walk, taking part of the Philosophen Weg (“Philosophers Way”) over the intervening hill toward the river and the old town. So my first view of Heidelberg was from a hillside across the Neckar, with the Heidelberg Castle in hills above the town – quite an astonishing and magical way to see the town for the first time! Eventually we made our way to (and past, as we were going out to dinner) this historic Heidelberg bridge that crosses the river to enter the town.

Detail of a Tomales Bay shoreline building with morning fog along nearby hills

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am fortunate to be within a few hours driving distance of the Point Reyes National Seashore, so I shoot there fairly regularly. I had a free morning on this early February day, so I decided to drive up that way with the intention of being there for dawn. I didn’t quite make it for the actual sunrise – at that point I was driving through foggy redwood forest – but I got to the road that travels along the edge of Tomales Bay on the way to the “point” shortly after sunrise, and as the fog was clearing from over the water and the hills.

This structure is what I think of as the “Launch for Hire” building, since a very large size with that announcement has been painted on both sides. I haven’t stopped to photograph here much at all in the past, but the early light was interesting on this morning – foggy to the north toward the entrance to Tomales Bay, and backlight fog and trees to the east – so I spent a bit of time photographing along here. I shot the building from both sides – the side facing into the “golden hour” early morning light, and the deeply shaded backside of the building with the very bright morning light and thinning fog beyond. In the latter case, there was a glow in the windows of this building, on pilings out over the water, from the light coming into its interior through windows on the far side facing the rising sun.

Pilings, piers, and other docking facilities for the Staten Island Ferry.

This is another of my Staten Island Ferry photographs from last summer. Although it may be a bit hard to see in this small jpg, I was impressed by the extensive wooden structures at the Staten Island end of the route at the ferry terminal. Pilings are placed about as close together as possible, and in densely packed rows. Beyond them, a walkway and wooden fence rises, and beyond that more similar structures. In front of all of that are several very dilapidated looking wooden structures that seem to me falling apart and almost useless… for whatever it is that they were designed for.

Sail Boat, San Francisco Bay

From time to time I take the train to San Francisco very early in the morning and then photograph while walking around the City. I often start by walking towards the Embarcadero waterfront, especially on sunny mornings when the haze over the bay is beautifully backlit, sometime so much that the glow obscures the East Bay cities and even the hills beyond. This was one of those mornings.

I had begun by photographing a bridge and then a construction site in the Mission Bay area, but I then headed back towards AT&T park, passing in on the walkway that travels along the waterfront. As I passed this area I had an idea that the atmosphere might be just about right, but I also realized that much of the foreground included subjects that I didn’t want in the frame. I was just in the process of switching to a longer lens – so that I could limit my field of view to an areas between the obstructions – when I saw this sail boat begin to approach from the right. I quickly finished the lens switch and moved to a spot that isolated this section of the bay from any other distracting elements, and almost immediately the boat passed across it. I had only a few seconds to work handheld before the boat passed closer to stuff I didn’t’ want in the frame and before a small motorboat accompanying it caught up.
