Rounding the Corner

Photo of a women walking on a darkened street in Madrid
“Rounding the Corner” — A woman walks around a corner on a quiet Madrid street at night.

Madrid is quite active at night — you’ve perhaps heard about the very late dinner hour there? We visited during the December holiday season, when the sun sets early, so there were even more hours of nighttime activity. I love to photograph urban areas at night, and these factors gave me lots of opportunities. Here a woman walks through a beam of light as she rounds a corner on a quiet street.

While it was possible to find quiet moments like this, many places in Madrid were packed with people during the holiday season, especially in the late afternoons and evenings. Major streets were filled with pedestrians and restaurants and bars were packed.

Fountain, Florence

Fountain, Florence
“Fountain, Florence” — A streetcorner fountain in late afternoon sun, Florence, Italy.

I made this photograph on one of our more-or-less random walks. This time we crossed over the river and headed in the direction of the Pitti Palace. After visiting that site we continued wandering in the nearby neighborhoods, stopping for a drink in the Piazza Santo Spirito before resuming our walk.

It was getting late in the day, and we were generally working our way back toward the river and then toward our lodgings and dinner. But walking slowly we had time to look around and notice details. This elaborate fountain was on a street corner, and I photographed it as an early evening beam of light illuminated it.

A Spring Garden

A Spring Garden
“A Spring Garden” — A green corner of the Japanese garden at Hakone Estate and Gardens.

In early spring we found time to spend an evening at the Hakone Estate and Gardens, where a celebration of spring in general and cherry blossoms specifically was taking place. One can go there at almost any time of day, but evenings are special. We arrived in late afternoon light and then, as we wandered the garden, the light faded to sunset and then twilight as colorful lights came on to illuminate the cherry trees.

Of course, there is much more to see there than just the cherry trees. The buildings of the estate are fascinating, there are pools and streams, bridges, and also sorts of flooring plants, bushes, and trees. In one corner of the garden, on a hilly path, I came upon this corner filled with extremely lush spring plants.

Horse Stencil, Walls

A stencil of a horse at a place where two walls meet in Siena, Italy.

Some years back, in the pre-pandemic era, we spent a bit more than a week in Tuscany. It was quite a trip — we mostly stayed with and traveled with family. We spent a week in the Chianti hills at a villa where our oldest son and our daughter-in-law exchanged wedding vows. We also managed to very briefly visit Florence (barely more than one day) and Siena (literally a few hours). Needless to say, that was only enough to make us want to return for longer visits — which we did this summer.

This time we had three nights in Siena, where we stayed in a little place just minutes from the Piazza del Campo, the famous central plaza. If you have been following along, by now you know that our mode of travel is a bit different. We do see some of the Big Sights (and Sites), but we also spend a lot of time just walking and wandering and getting the feel for the place. As a result, we sometimes end up with photographs of small things that you might miss on a more hurried visit — like this little stencil of a horse near the meeting of two walls along a Siena walkway.
