Evening Rain, Montpellier

Evening Rain, Montpellier
“Evening Rain, Montpellier” — A rainy, deserted street at night in Montpellier, France.

It was rainy during our evening exploration of the old section of Montpellier, France. We started from our hotel a short distance from the Place de la Comédia (main square) and headed up a busy main street full of pedestrians out shopping, eating and drinking, or just socializing. The light rain didn’t seem to slow anyone down. Eventually we explored some narrower side streets.

The crowds diminished greatly once we got away from the busy main thoroughfare. These streets were mostly empty, and it was very quiet. It being the Christmas season, there were a few decorations — you may spot a small Christmas tree in the photo if you look closely. The light rain enhanced the reflections on the street and buildings.

The photograph looks promising, alas, I cannot enlarge it – probably you forgot to link the thumbnail to a larger version

      Markus,

Thanks for alerting me to that issue. It happens from time to time and I just had to change a setting. It should be OK now.

      Dan

Purple Larkspur

Purple Larkspur
“Purple Larkspur” — Purple larkspur flowers, blooming in Northern California.

Recently I wrote — again! — about returning to unremarkable “special places” that probably don’t have any meaning to anyone but me. This photograph comes from one that I mentioned, a trail through a small ravine at a nearby country park. Every spring I go there to visit spots where I can photograph a few favorite wildflowers, including a particular little area where these Larkspur flowers bloom.

They are odd flowers, not like so many of the other popular spring wildflowers. Their color is dark, sometimes so dark that is is quite difficult to photograph them. (I try to find them when they are still in the shadows, and the soft light helps reveal details.) Because of the way they grow from a central stem, it can be challenging to make a composition out of them, much less get a plane of focus that lines up ideally with their dense details.

Deserted Street, Orvieto

Deserted Street, Orvieto
“Deserted Street, Orvieto” — A nearly-empty back street in Orvieto, Italy.

I suppose I could title this, “Yet Another Italian Street,” right? I have shared quite a few of them! Like some of the other recent photographs, this one also comes from the hill town of Orvieto. I made the photograph on a back street away from the popular tourist areas of the town, and at a time of day when fewer visitors would be about.

For those of us who live in the United States, it is hard to imagine what it much be like to live in these towns. We’re used to wide streets, lined with areas to park, then curbs and sidewalks and often some kind of open area in front of buildings. But these old streets were constructed in a very different time, when the automobile was not king. The buildings open right onto the avenues, which are great for walking but barely wide enough for motor traffic.

Houses of Parliament

Houses of Parliament
“Houses of Parliament” — The intricate facade of London’s Houses of Parliament on a cloudy day.

I made this quick photograph in London back in June, on the last full day of about four weeks of travel in (mostly) Scotland and England. We started this day by going to Westminster Cathedral. Patty has learned that you can visit many such churches simply by attending one of the regular church events. (For example, we attended evensong in York.) Advantages are that you don’t have to sign up for tickets or, in many case, pay a fee. (Though if they “pass the plate” it is appropriate to donate something, right?) However, you are expected to act as a person attending a church event, not a tourist snapping selfies! In any case, after visiting Westminster we walked back toward the Houses of Parliament.

Parliament is typically busy, with guards watching over all the entrances. But on this Sunday morning it was quiet and I don’t recall seeing anyone inside the fence. One other factor? The British snap election was about to happen, and I’m betting that every member of Parliament was out campaigning! In any case, we walked here. because I had a memory of a little pub on a nearby side street that we visited the very first time we were in London, and I wanted to see if we could locate it. And, yes, we did — just a few blocks further up the street.
