A ferry sails up the Neckar River past the Heidelberg altstadt, Germany

I grabbed this shot while walking across a bridge over the Neckar that crossed between the part of Heidelberg where we were staying and the Hauptstrasse area with all of its commotion and shops. In a case of very lucky timing, the boat emerged from beneath the bridge just as we happened to walk across. I think it is some sort of tourist cruise, judging by the activities that appeared to be taking place on board.

When I look at this photograph, the first thing that comes to mind is the word “postcard.” :-) The scene looks up the section of the river that passes by the old town section of Heidelberg, with its very narrow streets, shops and restaurants and the castle on the green hills above the town. The boat thoughtfully points right into the scene! We spent a total of a week or so here, in two segments separated by a week in Bavaria, and because of that and because we have relatives there with whom we stayed (thanks, Greg and Jan!) the town of Heidelberg began to feel like our home in Germany.

A red crane among extensive dock structures at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

I recently posted a photograph of a slightly different view of this subject in black and white, but I couldn’t give up the color of the red construction crane peeking over the wooden structure in the upper section of the scene. This is the extensive wooden construction around the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, photographed from one of the boats as it left on its run back to Manhattan. The photograph prompts me to wonder about at least one thing: Does someone actually walk that precarious plank extending over the water in the lower part of the frame!?

Pilings, piers, and other docking facilities for the Staten Island Ferry.

This is another of my Staten Island Ferry photographs from last summer. Although it may be a bit hard to see in this small jpg, I was impressed by the extensive wooden structures at the Staten Island end of the route at the ferry terminal. Pilings are placed about as close together as possible, and in densely packed rows. Beyond them, a walkway and wooden fence rises, and beyond that more similar structures. In front of all of that are several very dilapidated looking wooden structures that seem to me falling apart and almost useless… for whatever it is that they were designed for.

I’m afraid that there isn’t a lot to write about this photograph. It is an orange fence. On a boat! I was wandering around on the Staten Island Ferry looking for subjects other than the New York skyline here I photographed the railing as the vessel was very close to the terminal at the Staten Island end of the run.
