One a weeklong visit to this area a couple of years ago, I eventually started to locate particular nearby locations that I returned to almost daily, visiting at all times of the day and getting to know them well. We camped above a quiet lake, and below its lower end there were long meadows extending toward the deep valley beyond. Despite the lateness of the season (it had been a very wet year!) the meadows were still green and even wet in places, and there were wildflowers everywhere. In this little spot the view opened through gaps in the surrounding forest to reveal views of distant peaks.

It might seem odd to make a photograph of… onion plants. But if you have spent much time in the Sierra backcountry you may have developed an affinity for this plant. The wild onion generally grows in wet places, and when the conditions are right the plants are almost lush. The beautiful purple flowers are striking. And the fragrance of these plants, often combined with damp and cooler air where they grow, produces a pleasant sensory memory that I associate with these places and with backpacking.

A few weeks ago I accompanied the local flower photographer — the one I live with — to one of her favorite area botanical gardens where we spent a morning photographing flowers and plants. I’ve been having some fun with this recently, perhaps because i finally got the right lens for photographing this subject close-up!

Many things intrigued me about this flower. The remarkable patterns in the flower’s center, of course, were prominent. But working in soft light, at least partially created by using a scrim for shade, an amazing range of subtle colors became visible — it seemed at first like a white flower, but in this light the presence of tones ranging from blue to pink became clearer.

Maybe I’m taking this black and white thing too far? ;-) If I recall correctly, this was a relatively colorful flower, photographed at a botanical garden under filtered light.

There is a method to my madness. With many flowers, it can be (or so it seems to me) difficult to get past the beautiful colors. That’s natural, of course, and those colors are a major attraction of this subject. But here I felt that I might be able to draw attention to the beautiful and mysterious form of this flower by removing those colors.

A spring tidy tips flower.

This photographs takes me back just a few months to this past April, when a wetter-than-normal winter produced a spectacular wildflower bloom all over California. The state’s late-winter and spring transition is always special, but in these wet years it can astound. Places that are dry and brown most of the year are magically transformed — with fields of lush grasses and wildflowers everywhere.

In early April we made a weeklong trip to some of these typically dry areas to photograph the brief display. We spent a couple of days in the hills located roughly between the coast and the Central Valley. As we headed east, into increasingly drier climates, we stopped at one remarkable valley carpeted with wildflowers, the place where I made this photograph.
