Winter Landscape, Geese and Cranes

Flocks of sandhill cranes and various geese in the winter landscape of California’s Central Valley.

While I anticipate eagerly the start of the migratory bird “season” in California every fall, the most exciting time to see and photograph the spectacle is in weeks before the geese depart. By this point, it seems the birds are well fed and — from my subjective perspective — getting restless about their imminent departure. During the day I often find huge mixed flocks collected together and very active.

The primary activity seems to be feeding — which makes sense, given the monumental migration they will soon undertake. But they also seem to have a hair-trigger response to anything that concerns them — a raptor flying nearby, a coyote on the prowl, an airplane passing overhead. And when this happens they take off in huge groups, spiral around for a few minutes, land, and regroup. In this photograph a flock of geese is beginning one of these brief aerial forays.

Cranes, Sunrise, Winter Sky

For weeks I have been thinking about how little time remains before many of our migratory birds depart. I have been eyeing my schedule and the weather conditions looking for the right time to go look for the birds. Ideally I want fog, but that has been missing, first due to a string of very warm days and more recently to unusually cold and wet weather. So I stopped waiting for the perfect conditions that might not arrive, and I headed out to the Central Valley before the cold arrived.

I never know precisely what conditions I’ll encounter. On this visit I knew that forecasts predicted an incoming weather system. Fortunately the early clouds only improved the visual conditions. (Later it clouded up, but then it cleared well before sunset — sometimes I get lucky!) It is easy to point the camera at the rising sun out here, but usually that isn’t so productive since the light overwhelms everything else. But on this morning the sun rose into clouds that muted its intensity. I made this photograph as a flock of sandhill cranes flew past.

The Overlook

As I write this text, a few days before the photograph will post, it seems likely that this will be the final photograph in the series from my January visit to Death Valley National Park. I like to spend the better part of a week photographing there in the winter — the most pleasant and arguably the most beautiful time of the year there. (All bets are off if it is a good wildflower year!)

I shared a different photograph of this scene a few days ago. This one features a singe individual instead of a pair. Such a difference might seem small, but I think that the image of two people in such a place can evoke a different response than the image of a lone person in the immense landscape. I made this one in portrait (vertical) mode — partly because I think it works this way and partly because sometimes people are interested in a scene framed that way!

Dunes and Shadows

Low angle light casts shadows across sand dunes, Death Valley.

Sand dunes provide a virtually infinite range of photographic subjects, from the shapes of the tallest dunes down to the footprints of tiny creatures. In many ways, they are canvas on which the light paints, creating changing patterns of light and shadow and changing colors throughout the day. Sometimes the changes are very slow and the scene can appear static, for example during the midday hours. At other times the light changes so fast that it is easy to miss.

I photographed this dune scene when the sun was low in the sky, casting long and deep shadows across the large and small patterns. Not all dunes are so extensive, but these stretched away into the far distance.
