“Rain Over Loch Leathan” — A rainy and cloudy day at Loch Leathan on the coast of hte Isle of Skye.
On the first full day of our recent visit to the Isle of Skye we headed up the island’s east coast, eventually reaching its tip before looping back. There are a number of worthy and well-known sites along this route, among them the famous “Old Man of Storr” formations. We planned to do the hike up to the feature, but as we arrived the heavens let loose — as they often do in Scotland — with very heavy rain and strong winds. We suited up and started the hike anyway.
“Fog and Forest, Pena Palace” — Fog and rain in the forest on the grounds of the Pena Palace, Portugal.
You would probably never guess by looking at this photograph, but it was made in a location where there were a lot of other people nearby. It looks like a lonely, fog-filled forest scene, but I made the photograph while walking along a paved path to the entrance of the Pena Palace. The Palace is a remarkable structure that sits on top of a ridge above the town of Sintra, Portugal, not far from Lisbon.

Sometimes there are photographs in (almost) your own backyard. As much as anyone else, I enjoy traveling to beautiful places to make photographs. But I can’t go to such places all the time, so it is fortunate that there are plenty of interesting things to see close by. In my area that might include the redwoods or the Pacific Ocean… or just a nearby rural area at the right time of year.
I made this photograph along a road that is far from famous. (Perhaps the only people who would know about it are those who pass by on their way to a nearby local park with hiking trails). But around here, in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are lots of little spots where trees grow thickly and where fall colors continue right on into December.
“Autumn Forest, Fog” — Autumn fog drifts through a forest in California coastal hills.
Recently it has been very foggy across great swaths of the California landscape. Tule (or radiation) fog has turned the Central Valley cold and gray for weeks. At times the fog has spilled through the delta and over mountain passes into the San Francisco Bay Area. On one such day I decided to head to nearby woods to see what I could photograph.
I ended up on a narrow road heading into the hills, a road that I have known for decades — though I don’t believe I have ever photographed there before. At the head of a narrow canyon, just before the road ascended steeply to rise above the fog, I stopped to photograph this autumn scene. A few trees leaned this way and that, fog muted the light, and autumn leaves were everywhere.
