Late-autumn colors in California Central Valley wetlands.

As I continue my pandemic project of reviewing years of raw files — and discovering and rediscovering all sorts of interesting things — I have now arrived at the very end of 2012. I’m currently working on the final week or so of autumn and about to move into winter and then on to 2013. One silver lining behind the dark coronavirus cloud is that I have had the time and inclination to revisit these old images and relive some of the experiences I had as I made them.

Every fall migratory birds return to overwinter in California’s Central Valley. Starting in about November I turn my attention that way and start to anticipate visits to this landscape — one that I don’t tend to photograph during the warmer months of the year. But in the cooler and wetter seasons, when the birds can be abundant, this part of California calls to me. I made this photograph on a cold and foggy late-autumn morning as the tule fog was beginning to thin, casting soft light on the autumn foliage of the scattered trees.

My last real photographic expedition (aside from the ongoing neighborhood walks) was to more or less this place. That was more than three months ago now, back on March 13. I recall the trip well. In California we were in that phase where we knew what was coming, though no one had actually issued the state-at-home orders yet. I made a one-day out-and-back trip to one of my favorite winter locations, packing so that I would not have to stop at all on the road. This place was nearly deserted — most of the birds had even departed!

This photograph comes from a few years earlier, before virtually any of us could even conceive of how our lives have now changed. It was a wonderful winter day, and as it came to and end and the sun dropped behind the distant ridge to the west of the Central Valley, I photographed through this dense stand of trees.

A flock of migratory geese takes flight on a foggy winter morning.

This photograph comes from quite a few years back, so I may be manufacturing what seems like a reasonably clear memory of this morning. Perhaps I’ve experienced so many that they merge into a type rather than a specific day. But I recall it as one of those times when I arrived to find a large group of geese still settled in on a pond. Before long, they began departing in small groups — not a gigantic unified lift-off.

Judging from the camera information on photograph it was a very foggy morning. Although it was a couple hours after my pre-dawn arrival, the sky is still foggy, which suggests that the tule fog had been dense when I arrived. Such winter days, which begin in opaque atmosphere that lingers for hours, are my favorites in places like this.

Flock In The Fog

A flock of Ross’s geese in tule fog.

By now, these Ross’s geese are long gone from California, going back to the northern shores of North America, where they return each spring to breed. The last time I saw them here was on March 13, the day of my last pre-shelter-in-place trip to the refuges where I ordinarily look for them. It was a strange visit, with a sense of foreboding in the air. I went there alone, self-contained to the point that I would not have to stop anywhere on my nearly 300-mile out-and-back journey. There were almost no remaining Ross’s or snow geese — they had apparently departed just days earlier. There were also almost no other people. I photographed for a few hours and then turned back home.

This photograph was not made on that trip — it was made back on New Year’s Day, in a more innocent time. A group of us met up, gathered for food and camaraderie, spent the day photographing. There was tule fog that morning, which is just what we want. I made the photograph at just about that magical moment on a foggy day, when the soft light of the sun just begins to break through, making the atmosphere luminous.
