Ready to Bloom

Ready to Bloom
“Ready to Bloom” — A tulip bud on the verge of opening.

Here is (yet another!) of my tulip photos from a spring garden trek with Patty. This garden, at an old estate on the San Francisco Peninsula, puts on a remarkable tulip show every spring, and we often go once or twice to photograph. Tulip color can be intense in the sunlight, but I prefer to photograph the flowers in the shade, where soft light fills shadows and the colors are a bit more muted.

These tulips were growing in pots that had been placed, well, nearly everywhere around this immense garden. So I searched out examples that were in my ideal light, sometimes working quickly to photograph them before the direct sunlight showed up and obliterated the subtleties of color and texture.

Customers Line up at La Fama

“Customers Line up at La Fama” — Customers line up for opening time at Churreria La Fama in Zaragoza, Spain.

Any American who has visited Spain knows that the Spanish meal schedule is very different from the schedule back home. The most striking difference, of course, is that dinner is likely to be quite late — 9:00PM is not uncommon and it could be later. Other timings are different, too — lunch can be late, but don’t wait until 2:00 or you may find your favorite place is closed for a couple of hours. In this photograph the Zaragoza locals are lining up at 4:00 PM outside and inside this churreria and chocolateria.

For us, that long interval between lunch and dinner was a challenge. But it was clear that there were ways to fill the gap (and the stomach) during those hours. Everywhere we went we saw people sitting down for some kind of late afternoon snack. We heard that La Fama was a nearby “locals” place, and that sure seemed to be the case when we showed up at the 4:00PM opening. People were lined up at the outside window and inside the place was completely packed. Speaking virtually no Spanish beyond a few key words and phrases, we stopped and observed what was going on before finding our way to the counter to order… with a bit of help from a friendly fellow-customer who had a few words of English.

Pink Tulip

A pink spring tulip with early morning water droplets.

With this photograph I will (probably? maybe?) close out the photographs from our early March visit to a San Francisco Bay Area garden. We thought we were there for the peak of the tulip bloom, but only a few of the flowers were in bloom yet. This year’s wild California weather seems to have thrown off nature’s schedule a bit. But even one blooming flower can be enough, and this one seems quite nice.

You might be looking at the photograph and thinking, “the flower is lovely, but did you have to spray the water on it?” I can assure you that those drops were actually there with no assistance from me. Between the exceptional recent rainfall and the early morning hour, there was still lot of water on the plants.

Morning on a San Francisco street, as a man prepares a store for opening

This is another in my small series of photographs made on a recent two-day visit to San Francisco. Since we were there primarily to attend a couple of event musical performances, we had time during the day to combine general laziness with street photography and walks in the area. We weren’t up exactly at the crack of dawn — and then there was breakfast — but we were up and out on the street before things became very crowded.

From where we stayed, the walk down toward the Hayes Valley area near the opera house and symphony hall gradually evolved from a mostly urban residential to a mostly commercial area of shops and restaurants. This market was roughly at the midway point, where there were still residences (of the old style rather than newer condos) but there were also a few businesses, including this corner market, outside of which an employee was doing a quick clean up before, I presume, opening up for the day.
