Hostas leaves growing in a Portland, Oregon garden.

I made this small series of photographs of the leaves of hostas plants while wandering around the extensive rose gardens at Portland, Oregon’s Washington Park. I’m not a big fan of photographing roses – though I’m fascinated by looking at them – so I had not made any photographs while visiting that primary area of the garden, but once we began to poke around in some of the peripheral gardens that featured other kinds of plants I started to see things that attracted my own photographic interest more strongly. This set of leaves was in a large bed of hostas plants along a walkway and in the shade, and I thought that the colors and textures of their overlapping leaves created some very interesting patterns.

Building Facade, Reflections

The facade of a San Francisco building reflects the image of nearby buildings and the sky.

I enjoy looking for reflections in large, glass-facade downtown buildings in San Francisco and other urban centers. I find the reflections fascinating, especially when they hold complete images of other buildings or sky, the way that they acquire various distortions, and when the reflections begin to visually merge with the image of the building itself.

I spotted this building as the train approached the Fourth and Townsend Caltrain Station in San Francisco, so by the time the train stopped I had figured out that I needed to wander on over to this spot to see if I could find a photograph. I made a bee-line for the general area of the building that I had seen, and I soon figured out who to put together an image that included a wide range of materials: the building itself, the interior spaces beyond the window glass, the reflections of sky and clouds, and more. I especially like the bits of orange reflection from a building behind my camera position.

Steel Plates and Bolts

Steel plates and bolts found on a downtown San Francisco bridge.

This is one of those fun – for the photographer, anyway! – photographs that you might just stumble on while wandering around with the camera and keeping your eyes open. The subject is a detail of some heavy steel plates and connecting bolts on a section of an old bridge (early 20th century?) that crosses an inlet along San Francisco Bay. I had walked across it perhaps a half hour earlier but had been focused on other things. At that time I had looked at the bolts and thought they were interesting, but I wasn’t able to see a photograph in it that excited me. So I continued on.

Later, after photographing some industrial/construction subjects, I walked back the same way and happened to use the other side of the bridge on the return trip. Now the light was a bit different and something about this little section of the structure of the bridge caught my attention. I paused long enough to make three or four handheld shots and then moved on.
