“Gravel Road, Carrizo Plain” — A one-lane gravel road winds across the Carrizo Plain as spring vegetation comes to life.

OK, I admit it. This is a bit of a “record shot,” considering how this place can look like the peak of the spring bloom in an exceptional year. However, it does give me a chance to write a bit about the location and how I came to be here on this day. I was doing the long drive from the SF Bay Area to Death Valley from the San Francisco Bay Area. Since I had decided to stop overnight in Ridgecrest before continuing to the valley, I had a bit of extra time on the first day’s drive. So I detoured through the Carrizo Plain. (Yes, I have driven that gravel single-track, though not on this visit.)

At its best, this place can be remarkably full of spring wildflowers. But my mid-March visit was too early for that, so I had to settle for a landscape just beginning to build toward that climax. In this photograph, the wildflower bloom is just getting started. In exchange, I had the place largely to myself, without the huge crowds that come later. While most who visit for the flowers think of this as a green and wildflower-colorful place, the truth is that most of the time it is quite dry and desertlike.

A squall moves across the distant landscape beyond a plain filled with spring wildflowers.

Almost everything about this photograph is transitory, with the arguable exception of the distant hills and mountains. This is an extremely dry place for most of the year, but following wet winters it erupts into a remarkable show of wildflowers for a few weeks around the beginning of April. The rain and light in the photograph are more transitory than the flowers. It was a windy, post-storm day, with cloudbursts and cloud shadows racing across the landscape.

There’s always a bit of luck involved in landscape photography. We may like to imagine that we can control all of the elements that make a photograph of such subject, but our skill and knowledge merely improve the odds. In the end, we work with what we find. Another stroke of luck in this photograph: the passing cloudburst was in the direction of the afternoon sun, so it was lit from behind.

Spring fiddleneck flowers, California grasslands.

The photograph comes from Carrizo Plain National Monument, but it could be anywhere across a wide range of California locations this time of year. Beginning in late winter and extending into early spring, California enters what I call the “impossibly green season.” While much of the state can be brown and dry most of the year, colors near the ned of the wet season are amazing — in the best years and in the right places the wildflower displays are astonishing.

I was actually more in landscape photographer mode on this afternoon, focusing on long views across flower-carpeted valleys toward distant mountains, as sunlight and passing showers moved over the area. But this photograph goes in a different direction, focusing up close on these flowers and intentionally blurring the background.

A spring cloudburst moves across a Southern California grassland landscape.

At the end of March we detoured though mountains west of the San Joaquin Valley on our way home from Death Valley, looking for grasslands where the spring wildflower bloom was starting. After a few false starts — two dead-ends that forced us to turn around and try different routes — we finally made it to this big valley where wet years produce an immense carpet of wildflowers.

The tail end of a weather system was passing through, producing conditions that are common here in the spring — mixed sun and rain, sudden cloudbursts, and fascinating light. A downpour darkens the sky against a background of intense sunlight on the rain and distant clouds, elements that almost completely drained the scene of color.
