Winter Reflections, Central Park

Lake edge with ice and reflections.
“Winter Reflections, Central Park” — Trees reflected in a strip of water at the edge of a frozen lake, Central Park.

I photographed this little scene on a cold morning walk through New York’s Central Park this past December. We were fortunate to have light snow one morning, and that changed the appearance of the city and the park. It had already been cold enough to freeze most of The Lake’s surface, but the light snowfall covered imperfections. In this spot fallen leaves rested on new ice and the reflected the silhouettes of nearby trees.

The concepts of “nature” (and even of “wilderness”) are complex and, I think, not entirely fixed. Sometimes we accept the notion that these things mean “devoid of evidence of humans.” But there’s a problem with that idea — it suggests that humans are independent of the natural world. Finding the natural world in places like this — even if you can perhaps hear car horns in the distance — is a reminder that nature is everywhere and we are a part of it.

Winter Scene, Central Park

A winter scene in Central Park, Manhattan
“Winter Scene, Central Park” — A winter scene in Central Park, Manhattan

We visited New York City during the holidays at the end of 2024. We got lucky and had just the right sort of minor snow storm — one that left perhaps an inch or two of snow on the ground, lending atmosphere to he place, but which wasn’t serious enough to snarl traffic. Here in Central Park the meadows were covered with shallow snow.

We went out for a morning walk to meet our oldest son and grab a bite to eat. After that we headed north and ended up passing through the lower portion of the park on the way to our hotel. Here the trees were winter-bare, and their silhouettes contrasted with the hard-edged forms of the buildings beyond.

Fleisch Bridge, Pegnitz River

“Fleisch Bridge, Pegnitz River” — The Pegnitz River flows through Nürnberg near the Fleisch Bridge.

This photograph comes from our late-autumn visit to Nürnberg, Germany.. This is a large city, but we spent the entire time within the confines of the old city. We were there for three days, on a visit timed for the city’s famous Christmas market. It is our understanding that many regard this as the biggest of the German holiday markets, and it certainly draws a lot of people. Many streets were very crowded, especially in the main area of the market square.

However, it was possible to escape the crowds. One way, of course, was to go out very early in the morning before they arrived. Another was to seek out less-traveled streets and walkways. I made this photograph on a quiet bridge across the Pegnitz River, which flows through center of the town. Here the water moves slowly, there are few people, and there are even some trees along the water.

Winter Trees

“Winter Trees” — Morning sunlight on winter trees, Santa Clara County.

This photo was made in my “backyard,” relatively speaking, of the hills south of Silicon Valley. This morning it was very foggy here, and when it looked like the fog might stick around I grabbed my camera gear and headed out to see what opportunities might await. I did photograph some foggy subjects (photos will appear here before long) but eventually I wandered up an old rural road that I hadn’t visited in years.

California’s winter climate can seem quite strange to out-of-staters. In most of the state, except for the high mountains and desert areas, the latter part of winter is our green season. And now, in late January, it has begun again in Northern California. As I drove up this little road, new grass was turning the hillsides green, and there were leaves on some trees. I stopped at a wide spot to photograph the delightfully complex silhouette of this tree in hazy sunlight.
