Interior of the Meat Centre after closing time, Manhattan.

Businesses like this one, located along the edge (as I understand it) of Manhattan’s Chinatown district, fascinate me. There is often a sort of rough edge about them, but it implies that they are places where real work is done, and not that they are unkempt or that the owners and workers do not care. Quite to the contrary, as I look around this scene I see that essentially everything in it has a distinct place and a real-world purpose.

Technically this is a kind of “night photograph,” since I made the image while walking along a dark street and looking into this and similar businesses. Aside from restaurants and drinking establishments and the ubiquitous convenience stores, most of the businesses like this one were closed or closing. Here, the appearance suggests that the place has been cleaned up and organized at the end of the work day.

Marina Auto Body is not a place I had previously noticed on my San Francisco street photography walks. I’m a bit surprised, as it it is just a short distance down a side street that I almost always cross when walking from the train station toward the central downtown, and I have photographed other subjects near this intersection. Perhaps this time I missed the walk signal, looked around for a moment, and happened to see it.

I think that I perhaps first noticed the two figures standing in front of the show and set off against the mostly-blue paint of the building. I walked up the street so that I could be directly across the street to photograph — I might have wished to be a bit closer, but I had little choice given the wide and very busy street. I waited, and finally was able to photograph during a break in the traffic. The little building is visually remarkable, with vividly painted scenes on each of the large doors.

I think this photograph is mostly about blue, but also about the motion along a curved path of the two figures, and perhaps the odd poster near the right side of the frame. I didn’t check to see what “Micromania” is, at least in the context of this shop, though my assumption was and is that it has something to do with some kind of technology — phones, computers, etc.

Although the location of this scene is in a pretty interesting part of Paris, along the edge of Le Marais, the area right around this shop is a bit… gritty. Perhaps this is because it is more or less some sort of shopping district, and because there is an underground station right there.

A wall covered with art postcards in a museum gift shop, Vienna

This summer marked our first visit to Vienna, a place that we thought we knew a lot about — largely from our background in music — but which surprised us in many ways. We arrived by train, and on the taxi ride to our hotel I was stunned by the monumental architecture of many of the buildings and the layout of the city. During our stay we got to know parts of the city much better, mostly by walking from place to place.

And, of course, we visited museums. I made this photograph in one of them, as we passed through a gift shop. Something about this “rack of great art,” reduced to postcard size and juxtaposing a wild array of work, caught my attention. I think you can enjoy it simply as a wildly colorful thing, or as a place to look for unintentional connections and relationships. You could also test yourself by seeing how much work you can identify. You could also muse about the way that great work is transformed into postcards and what it all means!
