Reeds, Sky, Reflecting Pond

“Reeds, Sky, Reflecting Pond” — The sky above reed-covered wetlands islands is reflected in the surface of a pond.

On the right day, in the right conditions, these wetlands can sometimes feel like they are all about the sky. Standing next to a large pond that extends into the distance, the sky above and its inverse reflective twin stretch out in front of you. They meet at the horizon, with may be defined by a thick line of vegetation, as here, or the water and the sky may merge into a single thing.

It may not be immediately apparent, but a conjunction of atmospheric effects is behind this photograph. Above, the sky is filled with thin blue-gray clouds. Lower down in the distance, a rather thick fog bank still lurks. The foreground reeds are catching a beam of direct sunlight, almost appearing stark against the background of clouds and fog ad their reflection in the pond.

Wetlands, Clearing Fog

“Wetlands, Clearing Fog” — Morning tule fog clears to reveal wetlands ponds, grasses, and distant winter trees.

I made this photograph during a fortuitous moment of light and atmosphere. We were in California Central Valley wetlands primarily to photograph migratory birds. The tule fog was thick when we began our work before sunrise. But later on, as we came to the edge of this pond, the fog thinned around us, producing a bit of clear air even as more distant surroundings remained shrouded in fog.

In direct sunlight the effect can be somewhat harsh and stark, but since everything around from this little area was still shrouded in fog and mist (even the sky above contained clouds) the overall light was still soft. I got down low to position the darker foreground water and grasses in front of the more distant wetlands terrain and the distant trees barely visible in the fog.

Wetlands Morning, Tule Fog

Clearing fog at dawn in California wetlands.
“Wetlands Morning, Tule Fog” — Tule fog begins to clear above wetlands just beore a winter sunrise.

Some of my favorite photography conditions happen when it is difficult to see. I love photographing directly into the sunlight, in fog and mist, in marginal light, and at night. This is partly just my fascination with the complex lighting. But I think it is also about making photographs that don’t quite show it all, and which leave it to the viewer to wonder about the subjects and imagine what else might be there.

This is another of my winter Central Valley photographs, made in a place I often visit to photograph migratory birds in the late autumn and winter months. In full sunlight these landscapes can sometimes feel rather mundane. But at dawn or dusk, especially when tule fogs forms, they are transformed into moody and mysterious places.

Wetland Plants, Tule Fog

“Wetland Plants, Tule Fog” — Tule fog clears over wetlands plants at dawn.

We arrived here well before sunrise, paused long enough to assemble our photography gear, and then started on a slow drive along narrow gravel levee roads through a landscape of wetlands and scattered trees. Tule fog was still drifting about, but it was thinning and the clouds overhead in the colorful sky were visible. Before long we arrived at a spot along the west side of the ponds, where we had a view to the east and the light of dawn.

In the winter this is a slow and quiet place… except for the many thousands of migratory birds who arrive here every fall and leave right before spring. Most of them were off in distant parts of the landscape when I stopped here, so this became a pure landscape photograph featuring the colors of the predawn sky and the thinning fog drifting across the ponds.
