A scooter parked along a Paris street

I saw this scooter parked along a street in Paris — in the Le Marais area, if I recall correctly. In many urban European areas, at least that I’ve seen, such things are ubiquitous, along with the many urban bicycles. Here there is really little or no room for a car, but it is possible to squeeze in a bike or a scooter. The retro styling of these things is a lot of fun — they have an appearance that seems like it might have felt hyper-modern… about 40-50 years ago.

The scooter also reminds me of something that I rediscover to varying degrees when I travel, namely how much of what we do and expect is conditioned by familiarity with places and their customs. At one point on this trip we rented a car to drive from Paris (CDG airport) to a location southwest of the city where we would stay for a week. The area was semi-rural, but with towns and villages here and there. Driving in such places would be second-nature to me in the USA, but in France it was anything but! I had to actually try to understand and interpret traffic signs and graphics, something that takes considerably longer when the signs are unfamiliar and one is not a speaker of the local language. Even something as simple as knowing, for example, that it is apparently OK to park a scooter in a place like this would be an utter mystery.

Three men walk past multi-colored shutters in Amsterdam

I think I may recall where I made this photograph and the circumstances, but I’m not sure. I do know that these multi-colored sliding security shutters first caught my attention. I then did what I often do when I see an interesting street subject: I stopped and waited for interesting people to populate the scene. A few individuals walked through, then a couple with a child, but nothing seemed all that interesting. Then these three fellows came along, walking more or less in step.

The painting of the shutters surprised me a bit. First, it must have taken someone quite a bit of work to do this — it would not be easy painting all of those separate pieces in different colors! Second, in many places in many cities, these shutters are often largely covered with graffiti. But not here — respect for the colors, perhaps?

Pilings, Hudson River

Old pilings stand in the water of the Hudson River with New Jersey in the distance

We were staying at the lower tip of Manhattan, and on the morning of our first full day there this past August we decided to head out for a walk. We more or less followed the shoreline along the Hudson, eventually getting up into the streets numbered in the twenties before heading back toward the center of Manhattan.

These days the walk along the Hudson is mostly quite scenic, with walking/jogging paths along the waterfront and occasionally even more park-like facilities. In many places there are great views across the river toward New Jersey and some other areas. (The views back toward Manhattan are mostly up…) When we started our walk there was a threat of rain, but by the time I made this photograph the clouds were breaking up.

A woman stands on a London corner next to a pub

We were only in London for a short time on this trip. We’ve visited there several times in the past, and with the last two visits adding up to about two weeks we wanted to save our time for other places later in the trip that were going to be new to us. If that was the case, why stop there at all? The reasons were mostly practical — less expensive flights to London, an easy place to catch a train to our next stop in the Netherlands. But we also wanted to do a couple of specific things while we were there — catch one of the Proms concerts and visit a particular pub.

I don’t recall at the moment precisely where I made this photograph. I suppose I could figure it out by reviewing the photographs before and after and then consulting a map. But I’m not sure it matters too much. The surrounds look fairly typical of central London, aside from the momentary lack of lots of other people. It was the woman’s orange skirt that first caught my attention — it stood out in this scene that otherwise mostly consists of somewhat muted tones.
