Walking down a narrow street in Old Heidelberg, Germany

Patty, waiting for me – yet again! – as I make photographs on narrow back-streets in the area of the Heidelberg old town and the University. Yes, we did walk the busy and commercial Hauptstrasse, too, but more often I recall that we moved over a few blocks and walked up these very narrow and much less crowded streets.

Not only is Patty in this photograph – carrying her bag of camera gear and ready to shoot! – but a bunch of other members of her family comprise the group walking down the small street beyond. I think they eventually just gave up on waiting for us when we stopped to photograph!

Beneath the St. Johns Bridge across the Willamette River, Portland Oregon

Near the end of May we spent a few days in Portland, Oregon on a non-business trip. Most of our time was in the downtown area of Portland, probably mostly in and around the Pearl District. Yes, we did the usual stuff – Stumptown Coffee, repeated trips to Powell’s Books, sampling Oregon beer…

On the final morning before our departure we found ourselves with a few extra hours before we had to get to the airport, so we got out of downtown Portland and visited the area near the St. Johns Bridge. It was a quiet and misty morning, so our walk in the park beneath the bridge was a wet one, but I had time to photograph the bridge and the blossoming dogwood trees nearby. (For those who keep track of such things, this photograph was done using the little Fujifilm X-E1 camera – which is turning out to be a wonderful travel camera.)

A person walks along a San Francisco sidewalk at the edge of a concrete driveway

A made this photograph on the final weekend before the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) closed for a lengthy period of remodeling and expansion – this was the last weekend to visit until about two years from now! The closing weekend had sneaked up on me. I thought I had a lot of time left to see the Garry Winogrand exhibit, but when I realized that it would close in mere days I had to get up there. I had a chance to see that show (probably worthy of a post or two on its own), along with an extensive exhibit of work by architect Lebbeus Woods and another exhibit of a bunch of major photographers.

I also had a chance to do a bit of photography in the museum, something that I enjoy from time to time. I don’t shoot a lot in these places, but I keep my eyes open for unusual views, people, light and so forth. As I walked through a high hallway with windows overlooking a section of downtown San Francisco, I looked down and saw this landscape of concrete – the curves and lines and textures reminded me a bit of the Lebbeus Woods work that I had just seen. Shooting through the windows – which impart a slight odd tint to the subject below – I waited for people to walk through the scene, individually or in groups.

London Street Market

A London street market near closing time.

This is another photograph made in the narrow streets along the south side of the Thames river roughly in the area of the Millennium and Southwark Bridges, where we found ourselves with some time to kill late one afternoon. As we walked around with no firm plan in mind we came to a location where a street market was just closing, and the many vendors were making their final sales of the day and starting to close up shop.

Visually this was an absolutely compelling place to photograph, though I’m not at all sure I was able to do it justice – and I would go back given the chance. The many stalls selling almost anything you can imagine created their own interest; the place was packed with people shopping or just walking through on their way to some other place. And being under a bridge and in places in old buildings with lots of glass above, the light was truly wonderful. I spent perhaps a half hour walking through the area, shooting like crazy, and I especially liked the spots like this one where I could position myself in shadow and shoot directly toward the late afternoon light.
