Recently, as we approached the end of 2021, I revisited some photographs from around New Years day of 2020, the last New Year’s of the Before Times. As is our tradition, a group of us met to spend a couple of days photographing winter subjects, pausing to raise a toast to the New Year following a few hours of early morning photographing on the first day of the new year. If you are focused on your New Year’s Eve party plan, it may be difficult to understand, but I can’t imagine anything better than greeting the literal dawn of the new year in a wild place, accompanied by friends.

We have met on New Year’s Day for a few years, but more recently some of us have expanded our celebration to begin the day before. So we were out there photographing on New Year’s Eve Day, right into the twilight hours. Sunsets can be exactly what you expect them to be, but sometimes they toss something unexpected and remarkable your direction. That was the case on this evening, when a combination of the passing tail edge of a weather front, still air, and a very colorful sky combined to create a rather remarkable set of conditions. It was one of those moments when it almost feels like I just have to point the camera and push the shutter button. (OK, there’s a bit more to it than that, but at least the primary subject is plainly obvious.)

Yesterday I travelled down the Central California coast to photograph in what I think of as the upper Big Sur region, going as far as about Big Creek. I was originally thinking that I might have a new photograph from that endeavor to share today, but it did not quite happen. (Stay tuned though, I’m sure there will be something eventually.) So today’s photograph is a fall color subject that has been sitting on my computer for a while, awaiting its turn for sharing.

The photograph comes from a beautiful early December day, during the end of the “before times” when we could travel more freely. It was one of my first forays out into the Great Central Valley that autumn, largely to look for migratory bird arrivals but also to photograph the landscape. Light in this place is a tricky thing and can often be challenging. It can range from “blah” flat light through bright and harsh light, to fog so thick that you cannot see through it. There are ways to photograph in all of these, but they aren’t always easy. But every so often nature offers up some just plain beautiful light like I had this day. Diffused sunlight was striking the nearby trees with their autumn leaves, while the more distant sky was darkened and deepened by some fog and haze.

A quiet morning under fog with autumn colors, Central Valley

Autumn, my favorite season, is a month-and-a-half away by the calendar — and in terms of California weather it is more like three months away. Here the transition is gradual, and the first month of solar autumn still feels more like summer on most days, with warm or even hot temperatures and no sign of changing colors, at least not in the areas closer to the coast. (By early October aspen color does come to the Eastern Sierra Nevada.) We may get teased by a few early weather fronts in October, but the actual rainy season doesn’t start until November — and perhaps later in our changing climate.

This photograph comes from an early December visit to the Great Central Valley, hardly what most people would regard as a great fall color destination. But these wetlands, many of which are preserved in wildlife refuges, attract me in late autumn and winter. Right around the fall/winter boundary there can actually be a fair amount of color out here if you know where to look for it. The main attraction is the migratory birds, but I’ve come to love the quiet landscapes of this region, too. Because I usually arrive very early — typically before sunrise — and on days when most people aren’t out here (I love fog!), I am often nearly the only person sharing these places with a few thousand of my bird friends.

More birds! (Yes, there will always be more birds!) This small group of large birds, some sandhill cranes, was passing around my position on this winter morning just after sunrise — I still see a bit of the early morning warmth in the color of the light on the birds. The flight of cranes fascinates me. Perhaps because they are large birds, their take-offs tend to be near horizontal affairs, and they don’t get much height until they have covered quite a bit of distance. Compared to many other birds, they tend to beat their wings rather slowly, and they also coast whenever they can. However, I suspect they may have a sensor of humor, too, and every so often they will do some very strange things. I have one photograph of a group of them flying by in which one bird has twisted its head around and is looking straight up! When they return in the evening, I often see some of them fly erratically, almost looking like they are about to collide with nearby birds.

To address an obvious point, yes, there are a lot of photographs of these birds (and others) in my posts. With some subjects I can almost start to feel like I’ve gotten what there is to get, and I’ll mostly move on. (For example, you don’t see me going back to photograph Horsetail Fall any more.) But with birds the subject and the surroundings are so complex and change so quickly, that I can’t help but go back and see what else I can do with them. Beyond that, at some level photography of these birds may be, at least a bit, a fine excuse to to spend time in such places.
