A few through upper story windows toward street level pedestrians and geometries.

This is one in a series of photographs from this spot and of this scene, mostly made on this visit to San Francisco, though there are a few made on other dates, too. The photograph is, obviously, made from a location up high in an urban building — high enough that it was possible to get a nearly vertical perspective on the street below.

There are a few things going on here that were interesting to me as I photographed. I’m photographing through the tinted glass of a modern building. Recently I’ve been interested in the effects of glass on iight and subjects in situations where its presence isn’t obvious. Here it lens an unusual, cool tone to the colors of the scene. As I photographed small numbers of people passed by on the sidewalk. It was interesting to watch their interactions as they approached and passed on another. In addition, from this perspective things in the scene that would ordinarily be almost invisible become central, especially the various kinds of geometries throughout the scene.

A building and a reflection in a window.

This is another Portland, Oregon photograph, though there’s not much in it to specifically connect to that city — you could find buildings like this in any number of cities in the US.

My recollection — and it has been a few years — is that I made this photograph by aiming toward the window of a business, most likely a restaurant, and catching the reflection of the building in the windows. But the reflection was still semi-transparent, so the face on the interior display ended up seeming to float across the surface of the building — a sort of “Photoshop in the flesh” effect.

A store window in Portland, Oregon

Does anyone remember these things? I believe they were called books. Full of paper pages (not web pages), and sold in places called “bookstores.” There is an entire world inside each of the volumes on the shelves behind this window. (Though not a single gazine in sight, from what I can tell.) I hear recall, though the memory is fading after a year in Pandemia, that we used to go to such places and just sort of browse.

Portland, Oregon residents might recognize the window and the shop it belongs to. The photograph comes from a visit to Portland some years back on which we had plenty of time to just wander around with no particular goals in mind — which tends to leave plenty of time for observing and photographing.

A snack vending stand, shuttered for the pandemic.

This is one from the “Postcards from Pandemia” series of photographs that I occasionally make while out walking through and around my semi-locked-down world. The subject here is a building that I pass regularly as I walk through a nearby park. Typically this would be the busy snack bar for the local Little League fields, with parents working inside and kids and families lined up outside to buy candy, sodas, and other snacks. (Gummy Worms, anyone?)

But not this year. I still see the occasional small group of kids with a parent or two playing catch or practicing batting, but no games and no crowds. It is a bit less so now than it was back in late-March and early April when the world shut down around here. At that point I could walk and see virtually no one — I often just walked in the streets since there was no traffic.
