Blue Angels in San Francisco

San Francisco Bay Area photographers will likely be out in droves this weekend to photograph the Blue Angels during Fleet Week events around the Bay. (I won’t be there – going to photograph more eastern Sierra fall color – but I did see them “rehearsing” over downtown SF yesterday afternoon.) Jim M. Goldstein has shared some advice for photographing the Blue Angels at his blog – along with some of his impressive photographs from the Blue Angels’ previous visits.

Another Site Formatting Experiment

You may have noticed that the last few “daily photographs” on my blog have appeared in a larger size, rather than in the clickable thumbnail format that I had been using. These photographs are coming from my Flickr Gallery – and if the experiment works I may continue this approach.

(Once I complete the ongoing work to rebuild my own photograph gallery you will again be able to find all of my archived photographs there.)

Aspen Grove and Fallen Leaves

An aspen grove with newly fallen leaves littering the ground – near Aspendell, California.

This is one of a group of photographs I made near the start of the short road to North Lake. I had shot here very early in the morning, gone to North Lake for a bit more shooting, and then stopped here on the way to Sabrina Lake. When I arrived here I first stopped at an extensive aspen grove inside a turn in the road and started shooting there in the shade since the sun had not yet topped the ridge to the southeast. Soon the sun rose high enough to just barely peak over the ridge and I found myself on the border line between sun and shadow. For the next 5-10 minutes I moved down the hillside through the aspen groves trying to stay just ahead of the sun, and shooting the saturated colors in this area between the shadow and the full sun.

Colorful autumn aspen leaves at North Lake, California.

After being snowed on at North Lake the previous morning, I returned again on this day and concentrated on photographing aspen leaves, branches, and trunks in a grove along the side of the lake and near the famous “tree tunnel” that so many have photographed here.

To add one point… while I love the color and light of the large aspen groves and love to photograph their astonishing colors as well, I think I have come to prefer photographing the smaller details of these groves: a few leaves, some branches, perhaps against a background containing some rocks or trees that have lost their leaves.
