Chair, Steps, and Door

Chair, Steps, and Door
“Chair, Steps, and Door” — A white chair on steps in front of a black door, Kirk of St. Nicholas, Aberdeen.

I look for a lot of different things when photographing in cities — people, architecture, color and texture, special light, places that characterize the area… and things that just seem a bit odd, out of place, and hard to explain. This photograph falls into the last category, though I also like the contrast between the pure white of the chair and the darkness and heaviness of the rest of the scene.

We had wandered onto the grounds of the Kirk of St. Nicholas in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is an old church that was recently turned into a sort of arts center, as I understood it. My hunch is that someone who works inside must have wanted to enjoy some Scottish sunshine, so they took this inside chair and put it at the top of the steps.
