A Doorway

For some reason I can’t quite define, doors seem to be a popular photographic subject. Perhaps it is curiosity about what lies behind them — both the prospect of something being hidden and the notion of leaving one space and entering another. I often photograph them without quite knowing why, only intuiting that they appeal to me. Here I liked the contrast between the cold and angular nature of the stone structure and the the organic forms painted on the doorway.

Chair, Steps, and Door

I look for a various things when photographing cities — people, architecture, color and texture, special light, subjects that characterize the area… and things that just seem a bit odd, out of place, and hard to explain. This photograph falls into the last category, though I also like the contrast between the pure white of the chair and the darkness and heaviness of the rest of the scene.

White Door, Dublin
“White Door, Dublin” — A white door surrounded by colorful street art, Dublin.

I photographed this doorway on a block in Dublin’s Temple Bar District that features several little shops — eateries, a used clothing store, and so forth. Temple Bar is a busy place and not visually subtle. So I imagine that the bar is pretty high when it comes to attracting the eyeballs of passers-by. As a result, there is eye-catching exterior paint, large and colorful signs, and more.

Cubist Wall

Cubist Wall

When we travel we like to combine the new with the familiar. That was true on our recent trip — the Scotland portion was an extension of the familiar, and Ireland was new to us. That’s right, this was our first visit to the Republic of Ireland. We know there is much, much more to Ireland than we could see in a week, but on this trip we focused on three cities: Dublin, Galway, and Cork. This photograph comes from Cork.
