Porto Street, Night

“Porto Street, Night” — Two men walk down a narrow Porto street at night.

Porto is a fascinating and complex city and there is a lot to see there. But I think that we found the Ribeira District to be the most interesting part. This is the area of narrow, winding streets on the steep hillside above the Duoro River. It is, of course, popular with tourists, especially right above the shoreline of the river. But a short walk from the most busy areas, especially at the right hour of the day, and the crowds can diminish and the ambiance of the district takes over.

We walk a lot when we visit cities, and on this day we made a big loop that took us up this narrow, cobblestone street. We passed through at what seems like an ideal time in terms of light — it was dark enough that the artificial light illuminated and colored the scene, but there was still a bit of ambient light to reveal details outside the light and produce blue-tinted shadows.

Two Florence doorways, one leading to the “Santo Spirito Toilet.”

To arrive in this area of Florence you could cross the Ponte Vecchio (or other convenient bridge across the Arno) and walk a few more blocks. It is still a busy area, but the further you get from the Arno the more the tourist traffic diminishes. It was certainly not gone in this spot, but it was not the crowded scene that you encounter north of the Arno in the old part of the city. We were exploring a small square when I noticed the strange and seemingly-unfortunate name of the doorway on the right…

I think the the area is known by the “Santo spirito” name because of a nearby church. Logically I can understand how that name ended up being applied to other features in the area. But “Santo Spirito Toilet?!” Since people here likely know that they are in the Santo Spirito are, perhaps it would have been sufficient to erect a sign that just said “toilet?” Ah, well, who am I to say?

Gorge, River, and Forest

A river flows through a narrow moutain gorge past forest near Peja, Kosovo.

We spent four nights in Kosovo, where we were lucky to stay in the home of a local, the father of a member of our extended family. Because of our relative’s close relationship to the country — he was brought up there — we saw and experienced things that you might miss on a traditional tourist itinerary. For one thing, on several occasions he steered us to some remarkable mountain terrain, landscapes that rival “my” Sierra Nevada. On this day I made this photography he promised us steep canyons and gorges. We were not disappointed.

Trying to explain exactly where I made this photograph is a bit complicated. From the town of Peja (like many Kosovo towns it also has other names.) we headed into the nearby Albanian mountains, which rise from the edge of town. Here we headed into a very narrow mountain gorge, so narrow that in a few places the driving became rather “interesting.” I persuaded the group (of mostly non-photographers) to make a brief stop so that I could photograph. Here the river flows past impressively, the valley walls are covered in vegetation, slopes rise to much higher ridges, and the canyon becomes very steep and narrow.

A woman crosses a square early in the morning, Trogir, Croaita.

This past August I had the double good fortune to be able to photograph in Trogir, Croatia and to spend a morning photographing there with my friend Franka Gabler, who was brought up there. This town was all new to me in most ways, but it was familiar to her. We started photographing around sunrise and spent a few hours wandering narrow streets and visiting the waterfront… until we finally stopped for coffee and to sit out a brief rain shower.

The stone construction is typical of Trogir and other places we visited in Croatia. (It is not secret that the architecture and colors of European regions often reflects that the occupants had available for construction — and here it was stone.) The two of us paused near this entrance to this small square, hoping to have just the right figure move through the scene. Things often happen quickly in street photography, and I had just a brief moment to squeeze off three exposures as this woman walked through the square.
