Unused benches at a school closed by the pandemic.

One of the regular features of my life during the pandemic has been my daily (with almost no exceptions) walks around the neighborhood. They range from “gotta’ at least do the minimum” 30-minute walks that barely get the blood-pressure up to longer walks that can be six or seven miles long — sometimes on out and back routes and other times on giant loops. By necessity, these tend to take me through some combination of residential neighborhoods, minor “downtown” areas, and some light industrial districts.

I always have a camera with me, carried in a small over-the-shoulder bag that holds a few other necessities — a bottle of water, a quick snack, phone, etc. Most often I don’t make any photographs, but every so often the urge strikes — sufficient reason to carry the camera on all those other walks. (The camera is minimal — a rangefinder-style mirrorless body with one very small prime lens.) This particular walk took me past a school closed by the lock-down, where benches that might normally be the center of a lively teenage social world were scattered forlornly.

Seems like I still have one more photograph from our 2012 visit to the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon. We were there on a family visit and I was traveling light when it came to photography, taking only a single camera and one lens. A bit to my surprise, it turned out that we had some good photographic opportunities, so I made the best of the minimal gear.

The garden of course features beautifully arranged and managed plant life, but it also includes a lot of structures, ranging from small buildings to bridges and fences and benches and more. The form of this fence attracted me — I do like geometry! But I was also intrigued by the juxtaposition of new and old sections of the fence, a reminder that such things are not static but rather in a state of continual change.

A wall and two benches in a Japanese garden.

This is a “quiet photograph” made at the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon a few years ago when we were there for a family visit. It was not a photography trip, and I had intentionally travelled light, carrying only a camera and one lens. But we ended up visiting several of the cities beautiful gardens, and I was glad that I had that equipment with me!

The Japanese Garden is a beautiful and quiet place, and there was a lot to see and photograph there. At the time I made this photograph something about the scene caught my eye, but aside from a bit of quick work a few days later the file sat quietly in my archives for eight years. It was only this past week, as I continued my pandemic exploration of old files, that I came across this subject. After some consideration it seemed to me that this photograph was a candidate for a monochromatic treatment.

Rivets and Rust

Rivets and Rust
“Rivets and Rust” — Detail of weathered and distressed steel structure on the Steel Bridge, Portland, Oregon

I made this photograph at about the same time as another one that I posted recently — it also featured a close-up view of the weathered structure of an old steel bridge with rivets, colorful stains, and lots of weathering.

Whether the specific location is all that important is debatable, but I made the photograph on the “Steel Bridge” (that’s actually its name), over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. This is an old and quite busy structure, and it is full of fascinating little vignettes.
