An abandoned turnstile structure under security lighting at a closed industrial facility.

This 2012 day was completely full of photography, starting very early in the morning with coastal redwood forest and ending very late with night photography at this old, abandoned industrial facility along the San Francisco Bay shoreline. That might seem like a rather different pair of subjects, but in my view they all are connected.

Since I have photographed this location for years, I had probably walked past this scene quite a few times without seeing anything in it. But as often happens, on this evening something about it caught my attention. I imagine that this might have once been a busy place, with workers lined up to funnel through the turnstiles — quite a contrast to the scene on this night.

Mondrian Wall

Mondrian Wall
“Mondrian Wall” — A wall of a school building closed during the pandemic.

Why, yes, this is from the “Postcards from Pandemia” series of photographs made on my almost-daily walks in the greater neighborhood, an area including a range of subjects in suburban neighborhoods, apartment complexes, closed schools, nearly empty parks, a largely shuttered business district, and light industrial zones.

This is a detail of a wall at the front of a school that is became deserted at about the time when students would have been pushing through the last part of the academic year and looking forward to summer. If you are like me, you might find more than one way to look at this scene.

Beneath The Bridge

“Beneath The Bridge” — Beneath a bridge, reflections from the water of a small creek on concrete structure.

This remarkable bit of texture, color, and geometry turned up where a creek passed beneath an underpass along a hiking path that I sometimes use. The patterns stopped me cold as I walked though this area, where I might typically pay almost no attendant to the photographic potential of the spot. The light reflected from the rippling water covers the scene with patterns that run in opposing directions. There is a right/left symmetry, but the tones are reversed in the two halves.

I usually carry a camera when I go out, typically a small one with a single small “pancake” lens. Most of the time I don’t even take it out, but every so often something turns up that makes me very glad I carried it. In addition, if you happen to be a fan of landscapes, when you open your eyes you may find that the “urban landscape” has a lot to offer, too.

A blue window and a reflective wall, Manhattan

The circumstances of making this photograph are a bit… unusual. We had the opportunity to enter a building in Manhattan that probably not too many people visit. (I’ll keep the identity anonymous for now. Don’t worry, nothing conspiratorial or anything…) It is an old structure not too far from Grand Central Station. Of course, I had my camera with me, and I took the opportunity to photograph some of the classic architectural features inside. At one point I, uh, had to visit a “very small room” in the building for a moment. This very small room was illuminated by the quite blue light coming from outside. So, naturally, I had to make a photograph. Yes, I was the only person in “the very small room.”

There are lots of ways to look at a photograph like this one, and it could be “about” any of several things. It is about blue, transmitted through glass, reflected on walls, and fading from light to dark. It is about texture — of “obscured glass,” of painted wall, and of reflective tile. I enjoy defocusing from the literal scene and letting the the actual windows and their reflection combine into a larger shape, and create an imagined virtual object on the wall.
