Happy Hour in London can apparently take place in the street.

This scene caught me just a bit by surprise – in a good way – as we walked out of a street market on the south side of the River Thames and emerged into the streets of the neighborhood. It was late in the afternoon – more like evening, actually – and crowds of people were building everywhere along these narrow streets.

I didn’t stop to investigate inside this pub, but it looked like business was so good that the party simply had to spill out on to the sidewalk, and then continue to spill right into the street! There aren’t too many places in the US where such a thing could happen – both the drinking in the street and the standing in the street, but this area seemed to not be at all car-centric, so pedestrians could more or less be wherever they wanted to be.

Hotel workers taking a cigarette break in the alley, Savoy Hill, City of Westminster, London

Very near this little alley is a large and famous hotel. We come up to this spot from the back way, so we did not see the typical hustle and bustle of the hotel entrance, instead just looking up a very nearly deserted side street to see a few employees on break, apparently having a smoke, We walked into this area and discovered a beautiful church hidden away on a corner to the right and out of the frame. After stopping to visit there, we continued our wandering and soon crossed in front of the hotel where these folks apparently work.

Brick walls and windows along a London street, late afternoon

There is probably not a whole lot to write about this photograph. As we walked some London streets that were not quite as filled with tourists, I looked up this side street and saw the beautiful series of brick walls, with all sorts of interesting interruptions of the basic form: windows, an indented darker area housing windows, conduit and a lamp, etc. Between the darker bricks further along the wall and the shadow near the camera position, there was a brighter band of sunlit bricks.

Peak autumn color in a small stand of aspens high in a desert mountain range east of the Sierra Nevada

It is no secret that I love aspen trees, especially in the fall, and that I’m a big fan of the aspens along the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. I photograph them every year, and I have come to know quite a bit about where to find them and how to photograph them in a variety of conditions ranging from sun to clouds and rain to snow. The aspens in this photo are also in California… but just not in the Sierra.

For a while I’ve had the idea to photograph aspens that are east of the range, since I have seen them from time to time while out there, but usually at the “wrong” time of year. This year I had a chance to make such trees the target of some travel, and we went looking for them east of the Sierra between roughly Long Valley and Bridgeport or thereabouts. The specific location of these trees is not all that important, though I’ll say that we came across this stand in some mountains east of the Sierra – as we rounded a bend and dropped into a valley in mostly sagebrush and juniper country, the stunning color of this grove along a small stream bed provided a vivid contrast with the surrounding terrain. We stopped and wandered around the edges of the grove, mostly making photographs of the trees themselves rather than their larger setting. Sierra fall aspen photographers are (sometimes painfully) aware of the ways that aspen leaves can deteriorate in the autumn, including brown or black spotted leaves or trees that go straight to drab dead leaves without passing through a colorful stage. However, the leaves on these trees were among the most perfect I have seen, with barely a blemish and with intense colors covering the spectrum from barely green though golden and on towards orange and red.
