Winter surf below Sur Point and the Sur Point Lighthouse.

As happens from time to time, I made a series of photographs of this subject on this winter day. One advantage of digital photography is that it is possible — and useful! — to make quite a few exposures of transient subject like water and clouds whose precise appearance is difficult to predict and for which precise timing is almost impossible. While I’ve seen photographers make hundreds of exposures of really active subjects such as moving water, this one wasn’t quite so difficult — just a series of waves moving up onto the beach and the varying qualities of the drifting spray. My first inclination was to share a different photograph from the set, which I did perhaps a few weeks ago. But now, in looking at the files more closely, I’ve changed my mind and I think I prefer this one.

At any time of year the light along this section of the California coast can be quite interesting. Because the coast doesn’t run on a perfect north-south line, instead angling to the east as you head south, for much of the day offshore features are backlit to a greater or lesser extent. (The sun also reflects off the ocean’s surface in wonderful ways, even at midday when the sun is directly south.) This meant that the rocky shape of Sur Point was deeply backlit, and exposing for the shadow details would risk losing details in the rest of the scene — so I decided to treat it as more of a silhouette. (Some details are visible, though hard to see in a web version.) In the end, that nearly black form may help enhance the visibility of the mist and spray being blown from the big winter surf.

Autumn fog clears above wetland trees in California’s Great Central Valley.

This past week I made my first trip of this fall and winter season to California’s Great Central Valley. During other times of the year I usually pass through this landscape on my way to some other place — to the Sierra, mostly, but perhaps to Southern California or even north toward Mount Shasta and then the Pacific Northwest. To be honest, it is not a place where I want to spend a lot of time in the summer! But in autumn the weather cools, beautiful tule fog rises in the morning, migratory birds are abundant, and the atmosphere and light can be subtly beautiful.

This is hardly a landscape of icons. The terrain is mostly flat and largely agricultural. Perhaps the closest to that sort of thing might be the occasional clear views of the Sierra Nevada. But if you poke around in the right places on the right days in the right conditions… there is a lot to see here. I made this photograph in a wetland area that I frequent. I was hoping for thick fog when I headed out there before dawn — I did not quite get that, but the thinner fog allowed a bit more light on the scene while the thin fog softened the colors and features.

The fall color countdown continues with this (likely) second-to-last aspen color photograph from this year’s crop. To recap, this was a very strange year for California autumn aspen photography, with the pandemic and the historic wildfires both disrupting the usual plans. I was on the east side of the Sierra exactly twice this season. The first trip was pre-autumn, when I went over to try to join friends for a short socially-distanced backpack trip… but ran into extreme wildfire smoke and decided to cancel after two nights of roadside camping. The second was a short trip in early October to visit the aspens. The aspen colors were exceptional during this visit, but it was also cut short by wildfire smoke.

This photograph is a bit unusual among my series of close-ups of aspen leaves in that it includes more or the branches than usual. This branch is quite dark, but the notion that aspen bark is white isn’t quite correct. It can be, in the right situations and in the right groves. But it can also be yellowish or brownish, and young branches can have some rather un-aspen-like bark, at least as measured against our preconceptions.

Pacific ocean fog drifts among forested ridges north of San Francisco.

This is a reworking/rethinking of an older photograph from 2013. The previous interpretation was black and white — at that time I was shying away from cloudy, foggy images with a blue cast, but I’ve come to accept and like them now. (Going to black and white is often an attractive option when I can’t quite see how to make it work in color.) Somewhat unusual for me, I also may have darkened some elements of this version of the image. Perhaps a bit of darkness seems appropriate in this time of sheltering-in-place…

I made the photograph on a quick day trip across the Golden Gate Bridge and a ways north up the coast. My recollection is that I followed coastal roads up to about Stinson Beach, stopped there to grab a a bite, and then decided to take a hillier route back home. It reached a sufficient elevation to get me up onto the shoulder of a ridge where I was above the bank of fog extending back out over the Pacific Ocean.
