My morning visit to this lake above our basecamp was fortuitously timed. I’d love to take credit for great planning, but I must admit that luck played a big role. I had a plan — it involved heading up that way quite early and then taking the time to ascend a low ridge and walk to the far side of the lake. But none of that happened. While I did get a reasonably early start, I was soon distracted by other subjects along the route to the lake, and I ultimately arrived there later than I had planned. However, my inability to stick to my schedule played to my advantage.

I arrived at the lake’s outlet, a long and narrow channel of still water, to find that the “quiet light” (thanks, Keith Walklet) was still there, so I paused to photograph that scene in soft shadows. Soon I decided to move on and head up and over that low ridge… but I immediately saw another scene that I had to photograph, some lichen-covered rocks along the shoreline. Finishing with this distraction, I now realized that I really had to get moving and climb that ridge. But by now the sunlight was on that ridge, and its reflection was casting lovely soft light back on a rocky peninsula and the boulder-strewn shoreline. So — again! — I stopped to make photographs of this scene. But this one took longer, as the light continued to develop and increase, until sunlight began to illuminate the water itself, building abstractions of light and color and reflections in front of the peninsula. (In the end I never did cross that ridge or go to the other side of the lake!)

One advantage of photographing for a long time in one small area is that you may begin to see things that you initially overlooked. I’m often immediately attracted to the large scale landscape — lakes, peaks, forests, sky — and it takes more time, patience, and attention to start to start to see subtler, smaller subjects. These often constitute what has been called the “intimate landscape,” made up of distinctly non-iconic elements, and frequently offering and almost abstract quality of shape, color, and texture.

To find these things I have to slow down a lot. It is easy to become anxious about finding that Great Photograph that will knock viewers over. But those don’t come every day or even every week. Sometimes, in fact, there are long gaps between them. At one point on this trip one of my fellow photographers mentioned that he had seen me from where he was working, and that I seemed to be doing a lot of “contemplation.” Guilty as charged! In a sense, most of the work of photography may be done without the camera. Sure, the camera is in my bag or attached to my tripod, but I’m looking and considering and thinking more than I’m actually making photographs. This photograph comes from one of those moments — I had simply been walking along the edge of “our” lake, spending a lot of time just looking, when I noticed this pattern of granite and still water than I had walked past quite a few times before.

Trees march up the slopes of a rocky subalpine meadow, John Muir Wilderness.

Yes, I am still mining the files from this 2017 trip into the John Muir Wilderness. We were lucky to stay in an absolutely lovely area, and to find that this area was also within day-hiking distance of other wonderful locations, some of which were literally minutes away from our base camp. On top of that, we hit the weather jackpot. After a very wet and extended winter season, the lingering snows had kept the Sierra wet later than usual, and despite arriving here in the last week of August and sticking around until the very beginning of September, we had green meadows and wildflowers.

Perhaps a fifteen minute walk above our camp, beautiful subalpine meadows began. This is the land of small trees separated by expenses of seasonal green, dotted with boulders, swampy in places, and often open to expansive views of distant peaks. In short, it is pretty much my favorite place to be in the Sierra Nevada.

Photographer Charles (“Charlie”) Cramer at work in the High Sierra of the John Muir Wilderness Area. A group of us spent a week base-camped in a particularly scenic portion of this wilderness area, heading out each day to find and photograph the abundant and beautiful subjects present here – ranging from the intimate (wlldflowers) to the monumental (the peaks of the Sierra crest).

The pace and nature of the work in a place like this might surprise those who haven’t experienced it. Many years ago, when my orientation to the backcountry was via long pack trips on which I moved every day, I worried that I would become bored if I stayed in the same place for more than a night. After years of doing just that, I realize how completely wrong I was. We can easily find a week’s worth of things to investigate and photograph in such places, and at the end of each trip I invariably end up wishing I could stay longer!
