Central Station, Glasgow

Central Station, Glasgow

“Central Station, Glasgow” — The Central Railrway Station and underpass, downtown Glasgow, Scotland.

The Scottish railway tracks reach this station via a nearby bridge over the River Clyde, and the tracks are still elevated here. Above we see a glass roof designed to light the interior, while below we see… an underpass between two sections of Glasgow’s downtown. Because rail transportation is common in the UK and Europe we see many more railway stations than we are used to in the US. There are some very modern stations, but many of them are more utilitarian and feature older architecture.

Although we arrived in and left from Glasgow by rail, we never made it inside this station. We came upon it near the end of a very long walk that took us from downtown Glasgow to the West End and then following the River Clyde. We turned into the city when we arrived at the railway bridge over the city.

Sagging Building, York

Sagging Building, York
“Sagging Building, York” — And old building with apparenlt serious structural issues, York, England.

York’s old town is known for “The Shambles,” an old area of narrow and sometimes-curving streets lined with very old shops and businesses. (The appearance in places is “Harry Potteresque,” something that shops are now promoting.) They seem to take pains to maintain the very old and slightly off-kilter appearance of the shops, but this particular building is a standout!

And, no, your screen is not melting. This building actually looks like this, leaning precariously to one side, with the walls of the lower floor appearing to be badly distorted and cracked. I did not enter the building, nor could I find a name for it (though the sign says that ghost tours meet there), but I can only hope that there is some interior reinforcement not visible from the street! (Someone suggested that the building is actually solid, and that it was designed to look this way. I have not been able to confirm that.)

Red Phone Booth

Red Phone Booth
“Red Phone Booth” — A red telephone booth stands along a sidewalk in Oxford, England.

As is often the case with a subject like this, it turns out that there may be more than meets the eye. To me this was just an old red phone booth in a surprising location at Oxford University. But a bit of reading after I got home revealed that there are more than a dozen of them in Oxford. They are generally no longer functional, and they date back many decades. And, no, it does not appear that they are larger on the inside than on the outside. ;-)

Color is, of course, important — especially in color photography! If you keep track of such things, you might notice that this photograph and another I have shared (a woman in London) both feature the color red. The color red can be read (unintentional pun!) in lots of different ways. It is the color of blood and sometimes regarded as the color a passion. It stands out against all sorts of backgrounds, especially in the built environment where it is unusual.

Armadillo, Glasgow

Armadillo, Glasgow
“Armadillo, Glasgow” — The curving roof of the “Armadillo,” a venue in Glasgow, Scotland.

The popular name of this modern-architecture pavilion/venue in Glasgow is “The SEC Armadillo,” or simply “The Armadillo.” It was originally known as the Clyde Auditorium (it sits on the banks the River Clyde), but apparently the Glaswegians have a habit of renaming big buildings in Glasgow, and this local name stuck — it is now essentially the official name. As you can probably guess, the name comes from the overlapping curved structures that form its remarkable roof.

We ended up here sort of by accident. We had taken a very long walk from central Glasgow all the way to the West End. Rather than retracing our steps on the way back, we headed to the waterfront to find an alternative route. There a friendly local greeted us and asked if we had any questions. We had a few… and before long he was talking our ears off about the history of the waterfront, the local architecture and much more. Heck, I would have paid a guide for that information! He pointed out the Armadillo and the path that would take us there on our way back toward downtown.
