Something fun to share today — a photograph of this spectacular mural-covered building in Midtown Manhattan, featuring the work of Spanish artist Okuda. It isn’t unusual for me to (selectively) include street art in my street photographs, especially when the work is interesting and fits into the larger street landscape. On the other hand, it sometimes feels a little odd to feature someone else’s art in my own photographic work. In this case, I think it is as much about an aspect of New York City as anything else… so I’m going with it.

I was initially photographing most people (and to a lesser extent buildings) as we walked around Manhattan this past August. I made several other photographs of people, often in crosswalks, as we passed through this area. But this building is so striking that I made a couple of exposures of it as I passed by. One thing leads to another, and later I looked up the building and the artist and discovered that Okuda has work all over the world.

Sticking with the Paris street photography theme a bit longer (perhaps quite a bit longer?), here is another photograph from Le Marais. Like several of the other recently-shared photographs, I made this one within a few moments of my “Je Suis Bleu” photograph featuring three women and a fascinating poster-covered wall. Initially that photograph was so central in my experience that day that I overlooked others made right before and after it. Writing an article about that photograph lured me back to the other raw files, and I ended up “discovering” several other interesting images.

This fellow figures in several of the exposures I made. There’s another where he is in the middle of a street, part of a larger group of pedestrians that is fronted by an “in your face” image of a walking woman. (You may see that one, too, before long.) Here he appears alone, just around the corner from the location of the “Je Suis Bleu” photograph. Viewers with sharp eyes may recognize the chalk head on the wall at far left.

This photograph comes from a Manhattan visit a few years back. We usually are there for at least a week each year — though we have not been back since before the start of the pandemic. We miss the place! We have some traditions when it comes to these visits. One is to indulge me in a lot of “museum time.” (The amount of time I’m willing to spend in such places occasionally makes me the butt of family jokes.) We visited the Museum of Modern Art on this visit, and the photograph comes from there.

I’m often a bit surprised — though by how you’d think I would not be — by how interesting I find museums as photographic spaces. They are full of interesting and sometimes unusual architecture, and they are often designed to incorporate a lot of investing lighting, especially natural lighting. In many cases there is some sort of central atrium or similar that creates a tall, vertical open area… and that provides some wild and off-kilter angles of subjects that would look quite different if photographed on their own level. Here a pair of people stands at the base of a stairway, positioned in the angle between a nearly-black wall and a window.

Abandoned, Rio Dell

An abandoned building in the twon of Rio Dell, California.

On this last full day of our recent visit to the far Northern California coast we took a long drive through varied terrain out along a section of the so-called Lost Coast. While the mileage would have made for a one-hour urban drive on almost any California freeway (at least if it weren’t rush hour), the nature and condition of the roadway, along with the need to stop to look and make photographs, turned this into a full-day affair.

This is a very different California than what we see in the Bay Area, Southern California, or even the Central Valley for that matter. Most of the area is quite rural, and the effects of over a year of pandemic isolation are clear in small communities with many closed businesses. (Though a new business, one based on certain formerly-illegal agricultural products, seems to be thriving in some of the backwoods areas.) We came back to US 101, the main through-route, near here and decided to stop of coffee in the small town of Rio Dell. As we left town this building caught my eye. I’m guessing that it was originally a gas station before being turned into something else and then more or less abandoned. But what a paint job!
