Anne Street

Quaint name Ann street.
Width of same, ten feet.
Barnum’s mob Ann street,
Far from ob-solete.

Narrow, yes, Ann street,
But business, both feet.
(Nassau crosses Ann Street)
Sun just hits Ann street,
Then it quits–some greet!
Rather short, Ann Street.

– Maurice Morris

Fans of the work of American composer Charles Ives may “get” this. Not long ago I finally worked out the location of theManhattan street that gives the song its name, found it, and looked for the parenthetical cross street. Located on the fringes of the financial district it still has connections to this rather old poetic description. (Those who are inclined to find and listen to the song should look for some wonderful musical puns in Ives’ treatment.)

A Paris Corner

A scene in a corner where two buildings meet along a Paris sidewalk.

No big Europe trip for us this summer — we’re staying much closer to home this time around. But last summer we spent close to seven weeks traveling, almost all of it in the UK and Europe. We spent the largest portion of the time in France, between a return to Paris, a week with family at a more rural location, and a final extremely brief pass through Paris on our way to flying back home.

During our Paris visit we stayed right on the edge of Le Marais this time. The hotel wasn’t anything special — a tiny place crammed between other buildings — but the location was excellent for us. As some of you may guess, we were within easy walking distance of pre-fire Notre Dame, the Left Bank, the Siene (obviously), museums, lots of places to eat (but of course, it is Paris!) and Le Marais itself. The latter is a wonderful area that was not rebuilt as part of the Parisian efforts to modernize the city, so there are many very narrow streets and lots of old buildings, especially once you get away from the most popular areas. There are little gems to be found almost everywhere, including the fun street art that is found all over the place.

Corner of Krämergasse and Ingrimstrasse, Heidelberg

I have walked this street in Heidelberg a few times during three visits in the past few years. Sometimes it is filled with people (and bicycles), but it was very quiet on this day when we used it partly as a way to bypass the busy main street, which was crowded with other visitors. On the corner at the left you can see the sign for a restaurant where we enjoyed a very fine meal on my birthday a few years ago.

There are several things that I like about this simple scene. The streets have a certain neatness and orderliness that seems northern European to me. Not all German cities that I’ve seen look like this — and even parts of Heidelberg don’t — but it is a “type” of street. The light was beautiful, too — coming across the tops of the buildings on the left side of the street, striking the faces of the buildings on the right, but softened a bit by thin clouds. And, at least to my eyes, those bicycles seem to be peeking out from behind the corners and they seem like the only things inhabiting this empty street.

A woman stands on a London corner next to a pub

We were only in London for a short time on this trip. We’ve visited there several times in the past, and with the last two visits adding up to about two weeks we wanted to save our time for other places later in the trip that were going to be new to us. If that was the case, why stop there at all? The reasons were mostly practical — less expensive flights to London, an easy place to catch a train to our next stop in the Netherlands. But we also wanted to do a couple of specific things while we were there — catch one of the Proms concerts and visit a particular pub.

I don’t recall at the moment precisely where I made this photograph. I suppose I could figure it out by reviewing the photographs before and after and then consulting a map. But I’m not sure it matters too much. The surrounds look fairly typical of central London, aside from the momentary lack of lots of other people. It was the woman’s orange skirt that first caught my attention — it stood out in this scene that otherwise mostly consists of somewhat muted tones.
