It was near the end of a full late-January day of winter bird photography in California’s San Joaquin Valley. After seeing fewer birds (Ross’s geese, sandhill cranes, and more) than we expected earlier in the season, the new year had brought increased numbers that reminded me of previous years. We started this day before sunrise and kept at it almost all day, taking only a short break for a visit to a nearby area before returning to again photograph the birds in the late afternoon. As the afternoon wore on we began to look for a likely spot to photograph the birds at the end of the day. They could end up anywhere, but this time they congregated in an accessible spot along the edge of a gravel access road. Several of us parked along this road, positioning ourselves so that a large flock of Ross’s geese that had collected there would be between us and the sunset light on clouds.

The giant flock of Ross’s geese gradually edged to the east, and we moved several times in order to keep them positioned for best light and background. There was some continuous coming and going as birds flew off to other groups or flew in to join this one, but for the most part things were rather calm. Then, for no clear reason (an eagle flying overhead? Something else?) the entire flock lifted off suddenly right in front of us. This moment, which I have seen before, is unforgettable, not just for the huge clouds of birds turning and gradually spreading in the sky, but also for the sound — wild cries as the birds lift off, and the rushing noise of thousands of wings suddenly beating.

Ross’s geese on a winter evening in the San Joaquin Valley

The first day of 2015, spent in the San Joaquin with friends and fellow photographers, began in tule fog. However, the fog cleared earlier than it sometimes does, and most of the day ended up sunny, though with the typical Central Valley haze in the air. We photographed through the morning, took a long break for lunch, and then returned to photograph here again in the afternoon.

A few weeks earlier there had been almost no geese around, but a big group of them showed up to join our New Year’s Day party, and in the evening we found them settling in on pasture land. Here the group stretches of into the distance, a row of big trees is on the horizon, a few birds in the air, and the day is almost over.

Geese fly above California’s San Joaquin Valley in dusk light at the end of a winter day

Out here in the San Joaquin Valley winter wetland landscape, I never know for certain what the end of the day will bring. Will it be an evening when tens of thousands of birds — cranes and geese and others — are everywhere, periodically erupting into noisy flight? Or will it be a quiet evening with only a few birds? It is often foggy out here in the winter, and that fog might clear and bring evening colors or it might stick around so that the gray simply becomes darker. If the fog does clear, will it reveal a perfect blue sky or a sky with clouds from a passing weather front?

There were plenty of surprises on the late-January evening. One pleasant surprise was that a number of friends/photographers also showed up, and we often photographed together though the day and on into the evening. And in a season when it has sometimes seemed like the geese had gone elsewhere, there were huge flocks of them everywhere, and larger than usual groups of sandhill cranes joined in the party. The fog did clear, and at dusk the sun lit high clouds above the remaining valley haze. And as the day ended flocks of birds became very active, suddenly taking to the air and forming giant clouds of noisy birds that swirled in circles. This was nearly my final photograph of the day, made as some of those groups flew above the pastureland in front of rows of trees in the fading light.

A small group of photographer friends spent (for the third year in a row) New Year’s Day in California’s San Joaquin Valley, greeting the dawn of 2015 by photographing it! Dawn wasn’t the only attraction — we are also drawn here by the landscape, the incredible wildlife (geese, cranes, egrets, herons, ibises, pelicans, and much more), and the beautiful winter light in this part of California. We began our day in the pre-dawn soft and foggy light and ended it in post-dust light when it finally became to dark to photograph.

For me this simple photograph of a field, a tree, and some geese evokes many of the things that draw me back to this landscape every winter. Even on a day when the tule fog thins, the atmosphere rarely seems to fully clear, and the dusk light is soft and mysterious and full of colors. And at this hour the geese seem to be settling in for the evening, often collecting in large groups in fields of ponds. As they do, they often seem to fly low between groups, flowing across the still landscape and between trees like the wind itself or like the flow of water.
