A Whitney Museum employee photographs a family.

During our December 2015 visit to New York I had my first opportunity to visit the new Whitney Museum in Chelsea, at the south end of the High Line Park. I hadn’t been to the old Whitney, so I was especially interested in the new museum — not only would I see work that I hadn’t looked at before, but I would have a chance to visit a brand new piece of architecture. In fact, I thought the building was fascinating, especially outdoor terraces on each of the floors that I visited. (I started at the top and got through the collections on the 6th, 7th, and 8th floors.) The highest levels thrust out into space, providing dizzying and spectacular New York views, and the visual appearance looking up from the lower terraces is quite something, too.

I like photographing at and around museums. Often the architecture itself is interesting, but even more, the people at museums are fascinating subjects. Perhaps it is just because there are often so many of them packed so tightly together. Maybe it is something about a change in appearance and demeanor among people who are looking at and thinking about art. I spent a lot of time out on those terraces making quick photographs, and when I saw this family lining up against the wall of the museum, asking a museum employee (who was quite cooperative) to take the camera and record their antics, I quickly clicked of a sequence of photographs.

Brandon, Jameson, Lia – Central Park

A “snap” of family in Central Park, New York City from last December, when we spent a week visiting relatives and wandering around New York City. This photograph was on a cold winter day when we joined throngs of New Yorkers (and, like us, temporary New Yorkers) in the park.

I was shooting mostly in a manner that is much different from the way I might shoot landscape. Using a very small handheld camera and (mostly) a single prime lens, I shot while moving from place to place. Especially in the case of photographs of people, I did not always necessarily try for perfect camera stability—and the resulting motion blur somehow can seem consistent with the experience of the place. This photograph was grabbed very quickly, as we emerged from an underground walkway into the edge of the outside light.

G Dan Mitchell Photographs at Stovepipe Wells

Since several people have asked, I thought I would share an update on installation of my photographs at the historic Stovepipe Wells Lodge in Death Valley National Park. Late last year Ortega Family Enterprises (who also sell some of my photographs at Muir Woods National Monument) contacted me. They were about to take over the management of the facility from the previous concessionaire and were interested in selling some of my Death Valley photographs in the gift shop at Stovepipe Wells.

It turns out that they were also planning some significant upgrades to the lodging facilities at Stovepipe and they asked if I could provide a large number of 16″ x 24″ prints for the guest rooms. To make a long story short, they selected a half dozen of my Death Valley photographs and I went to work making nearly 170 prints of the six photographs, which were then shipped off to their framer for final preparation.

I finally got a chance to see the results when I visited Death Vally in early April. I stopped by and found out that they had begun the process of hanging the prints in guest rooms, and with the help of an employee I was able to get in long enough to snap a shot of one of the rooms. (Hanging in this room are “Transverse Dunes, Death Valley“ and “Crossing Tracks, Racetrack Playa.”) It was also good to see some work being done to upgrade and update the lodge!

It is gratifying to have my photographs installed here for several reasons. Several of the photographs were made virtually within walking distance of Stovepipe Wells, where I often camp when I visit the Valley. I also know that among the many people who visit Stovepipe will be a good number of my fellow photographers – and knowing that they will see my prints here is both a bit intimidating and a quite exciting! Finally, before Ortega took over the facility I often stopped to look at some of the photographs and paintings that had been there previously. (I was glad to see that one wonderful black and white photograph was still hanging in the hotel office.) With that in mind, it seems like there is a good chance that these photographs of mine may be hanging in this historic facility for some time to come!

Today’s Photo Coming Soon – Starting a Series of New York City Photographs

I spent last week in New York City doing a variety of things: photographing a couple nights of “Così fan tutte: Some Assembly Required,” exploring museums, eating a lot of wonderful food, visiting family, getting lost on the subway, and more. It has been a decade since I’ve been there, and this was my first chance to try to do photography in NYC. As many of you know, that is an almost overwhelming endeavor – there so much to see and do there that it is barely possible to skim the surface of the possibilities. But I tried. And some of the photographs will begin to appear here very soon.
