560 Blue

560 Blue
“560 Blue” — A man walks past a blue San Francisco building in morning sunlight.

Let me start by pointing out that this is not the first time I have shared this photograph. An earlier interpretation of it exists using a different aspect ratio. I came across it again recently as I scanned through my old raw files, and I decided to take another look at it. This time I altered the aspect ratio, retaining the original 3:2, though I more typically work with 4:3. This allowed me to include the decorative rectangles at the upper right and left. In addition, as I thought more about the role of the blue color in this photograph I decided to simply remove a few elements that were dissonant with that.

The scene is a San Francisco street, and I made the photograph on one of my day trips up to “The City” by train, something that was a regular photographic event for me prior to the pandemic. I was walking up into the main downtown area from the train station, pausing along the way to photograph interesting subjects in the full morning sun across the wide street. I had already made a couple of photograph of this very blue building when I saw the man walking into the scene.

A man walks down a narrow Florence, Italy street.

The old part of Florence is, at least in places, a fascinating maze of old streets, narrow and twisting and lined by buildings tall enough to cut out most of the direct light from the sky. In the right places it is possible — or nearly so — to photograph streets without including the sky and in light that is almost entirely shadowed.

These narrow streets can also be quite crowded with tourists at certain times of the day — so crowded that a photograph of a street like this one would have an entirely different effect. I quickly discovered that by going out very early in the morning or late enough in the evening I could find scenes in which tourists did not predominate.

A weathered figure on a Paris wall.

Today I take a detour towards the whimsical, in the form of a figure found on a a wall in Le Marais, in Paris. It looks like an anime character to me, but I’m not super familiar with those “folks,” and a quick image search online didn’t come up with an identification for this one.

I saw quite a few of these examples of paper street art glued to walls in Paris and in other places in Europe. Oddly, I never saw a fresh and undamaged example — those that I saw ranged from mildly weathered to nearly gone. For me, part of their charm lies in the weathering away of the material.

No big Europe trip for us this summer — we’re staying much closer to home this time around. But last summer we spent close to seven weeks traveling, almost all of it in the UK and Europe. We spent the largest portion of the time in France, between a return to Paris, a week with family at a more rural location, and a final extremely brief pass through Paris on our way to flying back home.

During our Paris visit we stayed right on the edge of Le Marais this time. The hotel wasn’t anything special — a tiny place crammed between other buildings — but the location was excellent for us. As some of you may guess, we were within easy walking distance of pre-fire Notre Dame, the Left Bank, the Siene (obviously), museums, lots of places to eat (but of course, it is Paris!) and Le Marais itself. The latter is a wonderful area that was not rebuilt as part of the Parisian efforts to modernize the city, so there are many very narrow streets and lots of old buildings, especially once you get away from the most popular areas. There are little gems to be found almost everywhere, including the fun street art that is found all over the place.
