Heidelberg street scene with bicycle, window, and colorful reflections, shutter, and door.

This is another little scene we found on a walk along back streets of Heidelberg Altstadt. The main street is very busy, and lined with businesses appealing to the many tourists who go there. You can find some of that stuff on the other streets but much less of it, and there are fun little vignettes that seem a bit (humor me here!) less contrived… and you certainly don’t see the chain businesses that are part of the busier areas.

It was also a bit easier to photograph here since there the crowds of people are largely missing. So we walked these streets slowly, with two goals — making a few photographs and finding a place for lunch! Both had successful outcomes. This window, combined with the green shutter, the blue door, and the red/orange reflected wall produced a striking color pattern. Oh, and a bit later we located a little restaurant that wasn’t too busy where we ordered a beers and food.

Roll-Up Door, Night

Roll-Up Door, Night
“Roll-Up Door, Night” — A metal roll-up door, old windows, and buildings in multi-colored night light

This is another photograph from my recent “alumni night” with The Nocturnes at the historic Mare Island Naval Ship Yard in Vallejo, California — a location where I did my first night photography about fifteen years ago, and to which I return at least a couple of times every year. The places is a sort of Mecca for Bay Area night photographers, almost all of whom have made the place a subject at some point. It holds very old historic ship yard buildings and structures, some areas that are essentially abandoned, a few areas undergoing redevelopment, and the effects of the ever-present San Francisco Bay that surrounds it.

Some things remain the same and others change. This photograph holds a bit of both extremes. The buildings in the scene have been there a long time and I have photographed them in the past. However, the lighting has changed significantly. This used to be an area of extremely dim light, but now there is a new facility just to the left of the area in the frame, and when anyone approaches security lights are activated and they cast a glow across the faintly green building. Its color controls with that of the more distant concrete building illuminated by an entirely different type of light.

Eastern Sierra aspen trees in transition from summer to fall color on a cloudy afternoon

There is a pretty good chance that this will be my final fall aspen color photograph from the 2018 fall season. In some ways the season felt a bit different, but the grand pattern was a familiar one. The slight variations included what seemed like a slightly early appearance of color at high elevations — we saw some pretty decent color a full week before the end of September. The main part of the season seemed relatively typical, though I did find color appearing a bit later (surprise!) than expected in a few places I visited about a week into October. That was my final visit, but I did hear from folks who were still finding green groves at the end of the third week of the month. I don’t want to make too much of these observations, as I’ve started to feel that that general timetable does remain fairly similar

Aspen Groves, Transitional Color

The colors in this photograph are somewhat subdued, at least by comparison to what sometimes happens at this location when even more colorful trees are lit from behind as the sun drops toward the Sierra crest late on autumn afternoons. On this day the weather was quite cloudy, and sporadic light rain (and perhaps snow at higher elevations) fell as I photographed. Some cloudiness be very beneficial for photographing these trees, as the softer light takes the edge off of the brightest highlights and tends to fill in the shadows, potentially revealing details that can be lost in harsher direct sunlight.

Although I have not printed this photograph as of today, I imagine it as a rather large print, one that would show both the compositional sweep of the curving groves and the details of the trees. The colors are those of a grove in transition from summer green to winter bare trunks, with a few highlights of intense color mixed with trees that are still partially or even entirely green.
