Previously I have shared my dark secret: for decades I barely visited the portions of California north of the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Tahoe line. Sure, I visited Lassen National Park with my family when I was young, and I’ve been on Mt. Lassen a few times, and — of course — I have driven north out of the state on Interstate 5. But the Northern California coast remaining mostly off my radar for decades. A decade or two ago this began to change — slowly — as we visited areas in Mendocino County and along the path to and from there, and when we pushed a bit further north from that base on some day trips.

Finally, during the last decade or so, I began to get more serious about this wonderful region and, among other things, I began photographing in the redwoods. (I have photographed closer redwoods for decades.) And then I pushed out toward the coast. On this year’s visit we finally made it to the edges of the Lost Coast area below Eureka, a portion of the coast so rugged that even “the coast highway” takes an inland jog. In the middle of this region lies the isolated (but surprisingly large) community of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach extends from this local toward the northern section of the Lost Coast, and no roads touch the coast again for many miles.

As I described in a previous post, in early June we spent a day driving a somewhat less-travelled loop in far Northern California, a route the took us west from US 101 and out to the “Lost Coast” before heading south along a stretch of lonely beach and then turning inland. From there the route took us through coastal hills and valleys, though small hamlets, and past the ubiquitous marijuana farms before climbing a tall ridge and then dropping steeply into a dark and quiet redwood forest not far from our return route along US 101.

The first portion of this look was quite varied and different from what I expected. I only knew that it was a narrow, winding road with a somewhat dubious surface, and that it would eventually take us to the coast. But I had no idea of what terrain we’d cover or what sorts of vegetation we would see. Although the route starts near a coastal plain featuring farmland, it soon climbed into tree-covered hills, occasionally emerging into open meadows that sometimes afforded expansive views. At times the road was quite steep — it is not the sort of gentle route that tries to avoid steep grades. At one point we descended from a high open area and were surprised to find ourselves in this forest of small trees, moss, and ferns.

On our recent visit to the far Northern California redwood country, we did a bit of exploring in places that were new to us. (While there are no hard and fast rules about this, I often enjoy trips that combine the discovery of new subjects with repeat visits to more familiar places.) One reason was simply that it is useful to head off in a different direction when the thing you thought you might photograph is not in an ideal state. But we also made some specific advance plans concerning locations like the one in this photograph.

Roughly between the Fort Bragg and Eureka areas there is a remarkable section of the Pacific Coast that is nicknamed the “Lost Coast.” Here the main highways (101 and 1) divert inland to avoid some particularly rugged sections. Few roads make it to the coast, and those that do tend to be narrow, twisty, and a bit less traveled. We drove one of those roads on a large loop that took us to and along this section of almost completely deserted coastline.

Upper Yosemite Fall and Lost Arrow, Autumn Storm Clouds

Autumn storm clouds swirl around the Upper Yosemite Fall, Lost Arrow, and the cliffs of Yosemite Valley.

Shooting with a long lens, I watched as the clouds floated in and out of this scene, at times almost completely obscuring Upper Yosemite Fall and then clearing. At this instant the clouds cooperated for a few seconds, lining up so that the fall was completely visibly, parting enough to let the pinnacle of the Lost Arrow appear at upper left, and revealing just a bit of the tree covered ridge in the background. A few seconds later the clouds again thickened and this view was gone.

I posted a black and white version of the same photograph perhaps two weeks ago. I have since printed the monochrome version and I like it a great deal. Today I returned to these files and since I feel that it also works in color I decided to post it again.
