There’s nothing like have the time for a slow morning wandering the perimeter of a forest-lined Yosemite backcountry lake. We camped at this one for something like four nights back in 2014, when a group of us spent a week in the high country making photographs. Each morning, well before sunrise, it was down to the shoreline wander and photograph.

I love photographs of trees in back-light, but there are some challenges. The obvious one, of course, is that you are pretty much guaranteed to be shooting almost directly into the sun. But second challenge is that the scene between camera position and subject is often in the bright sunlight, even if the background is pleasantly shaded. Photographing on a lake can help with this issue since the water helpfully reflects that shaded background and is hardly affected at all by the direct light, aside from a bit of extra illumination of anything that happens to be floating on the water.

Boulders and forest reflected in the quiet water of a Yosemite National Park backcountry lake.

This photograph takes me back to 2014, when a group of us spent a week in the Yosemite backcountry. We first visited this lovely lake set in a forested bowl not far from the edge of a big canyon, in an area with lots of beautiful granite slabs, a nearby overlook, and early autumn meadows. We left this spot after a few days and set up another base camp halfway back to our trailhead.

The lake is not a large one, and almost every morning or evening wander along its banks ended up being a circumnavigation. One shoreline was mostly forested, another was dotted with granite boulders, and a smaller area near the outlet stream was more open and flat. I photographed this scene one early morning just before the light of the rising sun managed to angle down to the shoreline.

Distant peaks in early evening light beyond a subalpine lake surrounded by forest, Yosemite National Park.

The description of the previous photograph that I shared mentioned a backcountry lake; this is that lake. Beyond the lake is a very large canyon, and the lake itself is surrounded by forest interspersed with some rocky areas and small sections of meadow. Its features are familiar to backcountry travelers who have encountered such forested lakes, and it provides a different experience than the more alpine lakes that I tend to be drawn to.

While we were there I frequently climbed up through the trees and onto a system of rocky slabs where I made this photograph. This one comes from late in the day as the light’s color is beginning to warm up. It was a year of wildfires, and their haze is muting the details and colors of the more distant mountains.

Sunset light on glacial erratic boulders and the distant peaks of the Cathedral Range, Yosemite National Park.

This backcountry photography trip followed a somewhat different format for our group. It was somewhere between a base camp trip and a through hike. The group often heads into the backcountry, sets up a base camp, photographs the heck out of the surrounding area for a week, and then goes back out. But this time we more or less split the difference between the two modes. First we spent a few days at a lovely, quiet Yosemite backcountry lake, and then we moved on to another location that put us closer to the trailhead of our exit route.

The first location’s lake sits in a bowl high on a forested ridge, dropping off on one side into a very impressive river canyon. The fact that it sits along that river’s drainage means that there is a lot of open country between it and higher Sierra ridges, including the distant peaks in this evening photograph. They belong to the Cathedral Range, a series of ridges and peaks cutting across the Yosemite high country and contributing greatly to the rocky, alpine character of the Tuolumne High Sierra region.
