A solo bicyclist on a morning ride along a curving gravel road past badlands.

Years ago I was a very (very!) enthusiastic cyclist. I don’t ride any more, but I still have three bicycles — one of the early StumpJumper mountain bikes, a touring/commuting bike with a handmade British frame, and road-racing bike (also with a hand-built frame). Although I have not ridden in Death Valley, I can surely identify with the experience of the person in this photograph.

I had arrived in this area early, and I had been making photographs since before sunrise. Although a gravel road passes through here and the spot is not far from some well-known locations, I had the place almost to myself. I saw almost no one else as I worked. It was windless and still and so quiet… and that passing of a single cyclist was enough to interrupt the mood! But not enough to keep me from photographing him as he passed through this section of s-curves, heading toward more distant hills in this lovely light.

Eroded formations and Death Valley in morning light.

This is a location that I often go to in Death Valley when I want to photograph in the early morning… and I’m feeling a bit lazy and trying to avoid a long drive. The area is, for many folks, more or less a “drive through” site, but I’ve been going back there for years, lingering and exploring on foot and with my camera.

For the most part in this place you’ll find close-up views of beautifully eroded formations of contrasting colors, with lots of opportunities to photograph the “intimate landscape” of close to medium distance subjects. But in a few spots you can obtain a wider view and see far beyond this hills. To make this photograph I climbed a bit so that I could look over the nearby hills and out into the vast expanse of Death Valley in the early morning light.

Detail of a rugged desert mountain landscape in late-day light.

On this evening I was photographing out in the valley among the sand dunes, focusing largely on that landscape and it small and large features. As late afternoon transitioned to sunset and then the sky-lit post sunset light my focus remained primarily on the dunes. But after the light left the lowlands of the valley it remained briefly on the surrounding peaks.

The terrain in this photograph of a portion of the mountains is remarkably rugged and barren. What plantlike grows on these faces and in the gullies is both sparse and almost impossible to see from a distance, and the landscape appears to consist almost wholly of fractured and stratified rock.

The last evening light strikes the top of a Sierra crest ridge.

As a photographer of landscapes I like to think of myself as being something of a connoisseur of sunsets. Hey, I’ve seen a few of them! There is not denying that it is a special time of the day, just like dawn, when the landscape undergoes a rapid and often striking transformation, made more notable against the backdrop of daytime light that changes very slowly. As the day comes to an end the changes accelerate — shadows lengthen, the sun approaches the horizon or other blockage, the color of the light warms, and distant clouds and other features begin to affect the local scene. Quickly the light disappears, leaving some alpenglow if you are lucky, and then the transition slows again as darkness falls.

Over several evenings it became obvious that this ridge above our camp was the last one to get the sunlight. Since we were camped to the east of the Sierra Nevada crest, there was little full-on sunset light here. However, given the curved shape of the upper canyon and the high peaks on the crest, there were a few spots like this one that were open to the light coming from far to the west. On this evening some clouds assembled above the ridge, creating a more dramatic backdrop.
