This was an evening of dramatically evolving light, alternately brilliant and blah! Thunderstorm weather in the Sierra is such a tricky and transitory thing, and there are frequent swings from “meh” light to astonishing light. When the storm conditions are at their peak, the light can be very flat and “gray,” with little contrast — and it can be a challenge to find ways to make effective photographs. (Not impossible, mind you… just challenging!) But these conditions often bear the seeds of remarkable and dramatic light, especially as the storms begin to clear. Breaks in the cloud cover often send beams of light — frequently warm, saturated golden hour light — across parts of the landscape, and this light may highlight specific features against a backdrop of contrasting darker scenery and dramatic clouds.

These effects can appear (and disappear) quite quickly, and landscape photography in these conditions becomes anything but a leisurely and meditative process. In fact, it is more a matter of “photograph now or it will disappear!” In truth, things happen so quickly that they often disappear before there is time to set up a camera and make a photograph. The light on the foreground meadow and its protruding granite slabs and boulders came in at a low angle from the west, here more clearing was taking place. I was fortunate in that it not only highlighted the foreground formation but also lit up the more distant granite domes, which stand out against their darker surroundings.

A Yosemite spire briefly emerges from mist and snow

During winter conditions, with snow and clouds and mists, interesting details appear all around Yosemite Valley, often in places that we might pay almost not attention to in more benign conditions. It is possible to think of the granite walls of the Valley as being monolithic, but the reality is the they are full of texture and detail that simply gets overlooked against the monumental scale of the most famous features. But when the dramatic conditions of winter (and late fall and early spring) arrive, bits and pieces of the landscape can briefly emerge from obscurity.

I don’t know if this feature even has a name, but I’ve been watching it in such conditions for a while, trying to figure out how to photograph it. For one thing, it requires a long lens — from a distance the area encompassed by this photograph is small. For another, it requires special light and atmosphere — ideally muted by ever-so-slightly directional light plus swirling mists and clouds. Both were present on this day as an early spring snow storm passed through the Valley.

I suspect that most Sierra visitors and residents have certain special places that have long-time associations, certain views that we almost always must stop for, no matter how many times we have seen them. Since the first high country experiences I can recall were in and around Tuolumne Meadows, it is probably no surprise that it is the location of several of those places for me. I have collected these spots for years — decades, actually — and they range from a particular rock outcropping — I stop to visit at the beginning and end of every season — to bigger and more familiar views. I understand that I’m not the only person who counts the first view of Tuolumne Meadows and surrounding peaks, seen along the road at the west end, as one of these places.

Tioga Pass Road opened for the season this past week. I missed opening day, but I did manage a long up-and-back one-day drive a couple of days later. Tuolumne looks quite different at this time of the season, especially if your main experience is limited to the short alpine summer when the snow is mostly gone and the meadow is mostly green. At this early date the meadow is brown (though you can see first shoots of new growth if you look closely), the river is flooding over its banks, and a lot of snow is still on the high peaks. In fact, new snow had just fallen above 11,000′ or so. This photograph does not show the whole view, instead focusing on a bit of meadow, a lot of forest, snow-capped peaks, and the clouds at the tail end of a spring storm

I’m coming to think of the start of this particular day in lower Yosemite Valley as being “Bierstadt Day.” Albert Bierstadt was a landscape painter who made several notable renderings of Yosemite subjects in the 1800s, paintings that perhaps formed the image for the park for many who saw them. They are not “realistic” in a photographic sense, but tend toward exaggerating features and using dramatic effects of perspective, atmosphere, and light. When I see Bierstadt paintings I often think both of how they evoked the wonder of seeing remarkable places like Yosemite Valley and of how flexibly and subjectively he treated these subjects. I also think about how little they look like the literal place, as least in objective sense.

However, at certain moments, the quality of light and atmosphere came close on this morning. The morning began inauspiciously, and in the pre-dawn light I could tell that it was cloudy and gray. However, as I approached the Valley from Wawona there were breaks in the clouds. Arriving at my first clear viewpoint, the iconic tunnel view (where I usually wouldn’t stop on my way into the Valley), the view included the usual Valley features, layers of drifting clouds and mist, and beams of colorful light playing across this landscape. I put a long lens on my camera and began to follow the changing conditions, picking out small sections of the grand view that seemed most interesting. At the moment of this photograph (and, indeed, the light lasted only a moment) sun beams broke through the clouds and moved in front of the face of El Capitan.
