I photographed this little vignette while walking around Le Marais in Paris during our visit last summer. We stayed on the edge of this historic district of old buildings and very narrow streets, and we had lots of opportunities to walk everywhere. I’m happy to simply wander here, looking and seeing what shows up.

The street name caught my attention, of course, and to my eye (which is not profoundly sophisticated when it comes to art history) the color palette and the shapes brought to mind the work of the artist himself. I would usually choose to photograph in earlier or later soft light, but I’ve learned to like the start summer light here, too.

Remnants of street posters, Paris.

One thing I look for when photographing in cities is examples of street art and posters and similar that have been up long enough to have been weathered and otherwise distressed. In some cases they reveal many layers of imagery and text — some painted, some in ink, and some pasted to walls and on top of previous materials.

Beyond being in Paris I no longer recall the specific location or larger context for this splash of color. I just recall that the bright colors, abstracted from their original context by being torn to pieces, caught my attention as we walked by, and that the background white field almost reminded me of paper product wrapping. There’s just enough form to the colors that I might imagine that I could figure out what was there originally…

Paris Street, Midday Light

Two figures in midday along a street in Le Marais, Paris.

Le Marais, in Paris, if full of visual delights. This area was “left behind” when much of central Paris was modernized, so you won’t find the wide boulevards and open views. Instead there are very narrow streets — often barely wide enough for a single vehicle, and that only because sidewalks are barely a foot or two wide. The buildings are old, often leaning at odd and interesting angles.

This photograph is a bit unusual in that I made it in full midday sun. I would most often not do a lot of photography at such a time of day, but I liked the stark quality of this light, and I thought that it could work as a black and white image.

A weathered figure on a Paris wall.

Today I take a detour towards the whimsical, in the form of a figure found on a a wall in Le Marais, in Paris. It looks like an anime character to me, but I’m not super familiar with those “folks,” and a quick image search online didn’t come up with an identification for this one.

I saw quite a few of these examples of paper street art glued to walls in Paris and in other places in Europe. Oddly, I never saw a fresh and undamaged example — those that I saw ranged from mildly weathered to nearly gone. For me, part of their charm lies in the weathering away of the material.
