Near the beginning of the second week of October I had the opportunity to travel to the Eastern Sierra Nevada. The plan was to travel solo, camp in some fairly deserted campgrounds, largely keep my distance from other visitors, and spend some time photographing the fall color. The word from others who had been there a few days earlier was that the fall color was perhaps better than usual, and I didn’t want to miss it. I headed over the crest at Sonora Pass and almost immediately encountered truly awful wildfire smoke that only got worse as I continue south. Eventually it became tolerable near Bishop, so I headed into the mountains and set up camp.

Photography was fine the next day, as the smoke had thinned a great deal. It was still there, but not oppressive. However, that evening it returned with a vengeance and I spent the night wondering how much damage it was doing to my health. The next morning I was up way before dawn, and I decided to at least try on nearby “sure bet” subject, where I had thought about photographing from a particular location in ways that might minimize the visibility of the smoke. I arrived and, sure enough, it was smoky, though less awful than the night before. I set up above the lake behind this beautiful pair of aspens, and mostly composed in ways the eliminated the long views, instead comprising the warm orange and reddish tones of the aspens with the cool, blue colors of the lake.

There are many ways to look at aspen trees. The autumn colors themselves are striking, whether you look at individual leaves, small groups of trees, or an entire forest. But the other distinct annual phases have their charms, too — the bare winter trunks and branches, the springtime eruption of new growth, the “quaking” green leaves of summer. Beyond that, I’m fascinated by the larger patterns of how groves of these trees spread across the landscape, sometimes seeming to “flow” across it, and at others to dot it in isolated groups.

This little group of trees is connected to several of those modes of seeing. This year groves like this on in the Eastern Sierra seemed a bit more likely to include the beautiful orange and yellow colors. The trees in the photo are part of a much larger pattern — this copse extends a line of trees that extends along and beyond the shore of a like, almost surrounding it and flowing above and below it. It lies right up against a rock face, and by early autumn the trees remain it its shadow well into the late morning, providing soft light that intensifies the color of the leaves.

This year’s fall Sierra Nevada photography has been challenging in several ways. The pandemic has changed our travel routines, of course. But the unprecedented wildfire season in the West has impacted photography, too. Autumn wildfire smoke has always been present here — it is one of the causes of the lovely soft light during this season — but this year large areas have been blanketed with an oppressive pall for weeks. When I arrived in the Eastern Sierra recently the smoke was so bad that, for example, I could barely see Mono Lake as I drove past it. I continued far south to where is was less awful, but it was a factor during the entirety of my visit.

The day before I made this photograph the smoke had abated a bit. It was inescapable but thin enough to let in sunshine. But late that day a bank of thick smoke descended on my campsite, and I wondered what the morning would bring. It brought more smoke. I went to a familiar nearby location and thought about how to mostly exclude distant views of the smoke-draped landscape. I decided to focus on some very red trees along the shoreline of a familiar lake, mostly framing photographs to emphasize the trees and de-emphasize the longer views.

Water plants reflected on the surface of a wetland pond.

In another post that I queued up recently I mentioned some aspects of the experience of photographing migratory birds, pointing out that a lot of “down time” is part of the experience — times when there isn’t a lot of action going on. The birds may be static — or missing! — and one waits. In that other post I point out that these slow times are certainly not a bad thing! The quiet stillness can grow on you eventually, and there are other things to see and photograph, too.

I’m not at all a “pure bird photographer.” When I’m in the field photographing this subject I spend a good portion of my time thinking as a landscape photographer. Even when the primary subject is a bird or birds, I often consider how that bird is part of the landscape. But I also frequently switch gears entirely and focus on the space in which the birds live… and I photograph landscapes. On this occasion I was working a wetland area and the reflections of plants in the water caught my attention.
